Ae 2 ® 2 Rbnee Young, this week’s In the Spotlight student at Dallas’ High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Young of Shavertown. She has one. brother, John, a sophomore at West, Side Tech. Renee, a senior at the high school, is in the college prep program, and after graduating this June, she plans to attend Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania. She is. undecided about a major and probably will wait until she completes her freshman year. She is an honor student and is a member of the National Honor Society. Her cum. average in- cluding ninth grade is 3.4. An ardent sports fan, both as a participant and spectator, Renee has been on the Dallas hockey, teams since eighth grade. She also has played basketball since eighth grade and this year is the only returning letterman on the girls varsity team which is coached by Kit Karuza. Renee also is a member of the Ski Club and goes on the club’s ski trips when the basketball games do not interfere. During her junior year, she was a member of the junior steering committee and also was a member of the student council. 7th grade ‘adapt’s societies Seventh Grade History students: of William Roberts at the Dallas Junior High School ‘ex- perienced an interaction unit exploring the im- portance of physical environment to past, present, ‘and future societies. in Project ADAPT. Students “‘were’ ‘en- couraged to become 'in- tellfectually. and emotionally involved in the study of physical geography, anthropology, and world geography in small group research on the effects of physical environment on the culture of ° various societies. Each group studied the climate zones, vegetation zones, landforms, wildlife, and minerals in relation to the human capacity to oercome the problems found in vastly different physical en- vironments. Specific activities in- cluded the reading and interpreting of maps dealing - with specific geographic data, the correlation of data from various physical maps, the “application of data from reference sources, the preparation and presentation of group conclusions to the other students, and finally the evaluation of the work of fellow “students in other groups. Project ADAPT is a part of the new and ex- panding action curriculum ‘under development at the Dallas Junior High School. O'Reilly sets placement test date Guidance will administer the S.R.A. High School Placement Test to all public school students planning on entering Bishop O’Reilly as a freshman for the 1980-81 school year, on Jan. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon. Renee likes to read and novels are her favorite. She also likes to listen to music with Bob Dillon and Neil Young. She loves to travel and has toured most of the East Coast. She is looking forward to a trip to another country either before or after graduation. Renee said if she had a hobby it would be to earn and save money to travel. She works part-time at ‘Franklin’s Restaurant. She also is active in the Dallas Community Church. Renee said the students at Dallas High are ‘‘down- to-earth’”. She thinks that the faculty is excellent and she says the school has a great college prep program. Renee said that the high school needs a new gym that the present one is in deplorable condition. She also hopes that the high school roof will be fixed. The school spirit has greatly improved, ac- cording to Renee, and there is more support at athletic events from everyone. He has applied to University of Pittsburgh, St. Francis College, and University of Delaware, and whichever one he attends Tommy plans to major in psychology. Mark is a junior and Chris a freshman at Lake- Lehman High School; Billy is in seventh grade at Gate of Heaven, Mollie is in fifth and Joanne in fourth grade at Gate of Heaven. Tommy is a member of the Lake-Lehman High School football team, playing running back for the past four years. He has played basketball since he was a second Heaven becoming a member of the Knights basketball team when he transferred to Lake- Lehman in ninth grade. He takes part in the 100-yd. dash, 220-yard, 440-yard runs, mile relay and high jump. His best event is the 440. Tommy won that event-in the Junior Olympics meet at Meyers High school and went on to the State Junior Olympics compe- tition where he placed sixth. Also interested in drama, he played a part in the junior production, ‘Magic, Magic’, and this year was in the musical “No, No Nanette’. Tommy is a member of the Varsity Club. Although not in the school’s National Honor Society, he has been on the honor roll numerous times. This year he made the scholar’s list and if he makes it again this marking period he will be a candidate for the Honor Society. Since the entire Boyle family is in sports, it is not surprising that Tommy enjoys sports activities in his leisure time. He does a lot of weight lifting and jogging and ran in the Back Mountain Bicen- tennial Run. His parents and brothers and sisters also run, especially in the summer. Tommy enjoys fresh water fishing, preferably trout fishing. He does a lot of hiking and camping most of it locally.
