Sisters of Mercy, Scranton Province, commemorated Mercy Day on Monday by presenting College Misericordia with a check for $297,417 which represents the con- tribution of the Sisters of Mercy for 1979. The check presentation was made by Sister Mary Ann Dillion, R.S.M., Provincial Administrator, to Dr. Joseph R. Fink, President of College Misericordia. In presenting the gift, Sister Mary Ann said, “It is fitting that this gift is made on Mercy Day, Sept. 24. This is the an- nual, world-wide celebration of our com- munity’s dedication to the service of the poor, the sick, and the uneducated. This year, the Sisters of Mercy commemorate 148 years of life.” Mercy Day is also the 55th anniversary of the Sisters of Mercy spon- sorship of College Misericordia. The Sisters opened the doors at Misericordia to the community in 1924, graduating their first class of five students in 1927. In the ensuing half century, the Sisters have been responsible for accepting over 6,000 sons and daughters of the community and returning educators, community leaders, and other professional people. Sister Mary Ann called that service the act of Principal James L. Nicholas announced today that Pamela J. Adams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Adams, has been named a commended student in the 1980 National Merit Scholarship Program. In achieving this distinction Miss Adams is one of approximately 35,000 students who them in this elite academic group. An active member of the Lake-Lehman student body, Miss Adams has been a member of the award-winning band and has served as a section leader. She has also been a member of the yearbook and newspaper staffs and was elected Key Club president. She is also serving as yearbook business manager. In both her ninth and tenth grade years Miss Adams received cer- tificates for her per- formance in the National Educational Development Test. In both cases she placed in the 99 percentile which places her in the top one percent of students taking the test nationwide. Presently undecided about her. future college choice, Miss Adams is considering ~~ Massachu- setts Institute of Technology, Virginia and Cornell Universities for a career in Electrical Engineering. “providing an vironment for ee which demonstrates and makes viable Christian values.” There are 20 Sisters of Mercy currently serving on the faculty at College Misericordia, with seven serving in Administration. Two, top administrative posts, Academic Dean and Dean of Students, are served by Sister Marie Dolores Moore, R.S.M., and Sister Martha Hanlon, R.S.M., respectively. “The service of the Sisters of Mercy to College Misericordia is an invaluable asset,’”’ ac- cording to Dr. Fink, ‘“‘which cannot be measured in terms of money alone. Their Results of S.K.LL.S. program The Dallas School District has received the evaluation of its federally funded E.S.E.A. Title I program; ‘‘S.K.LL.S.” Results of the program indicated that students involved in Title I reading and math programs in grades 1-8 (1-6 for math), showed evidence of ‘significant gains.” Students are enrolled in the program for ap- proximately eight months, and are expected to gain one month in grade level per one month of instruction, or a total gain of eight months. Dallas students’ average gain for grades 1-8 in reading was 19.5 months or 1.75 years. In math, grades 1-4, the average gain was 21.9 months or 1:99. years. The Dallas S.K.I.L.S. program is designed to aid those children who qualify under the E.S.E.A. Title I guidelines in improving their basic skills “in reading and math. The program in- volves 13 staff members as follows: five reading specialists, three learning resource specialists, and five instructional aides. They are reading specialists: Linda Baird, Florence Gauthier, Sharon Hartshorne, Rita Mundy, and Jack Wega; learning resource specialists: Cathy Flick, Grace Fries and Jean Utter; instructional aides: Janet Evans, Evelyn Farrell, Alice Krispin, Dolores Ostrum, and Sandra Stirling. From 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. the station features contemporary music, and from 8 p.m. to signoff it highlights album-oriented rock. The station also has news, sports, and special programs. The station is operated by the campus Broad- casting Club, under the advisement of Ralph Carmode, assistant professor of communication.
