Now the Back Mountain is adding a new name and a great tournament opportunity for local tennis buffs, age 16 and older. Its the Dallas Open “Tupper Cup’’ tour- nament scheduled for July 27, 28 and 29 at the Dallas Recreation Center. Joining the Rec Center in sponsoring the tour- nament are the Dallas Post and Tupper Sporting Equipment, Dallas Shopping Center. Tournament Chairman Jim Tupper said trophies will be awarded for both first and second place winners in men’s and women’s singles, and men’s and women’s doubles. = No mixed doubles are planned for In addition, each entry will receive a' Tupper Cup tournament’ tee-shirt and a three month subscrip- tion to the Dallas Post. Entry fees of $3 for singles and $6 for doubles are required of en- trants.(Entrants who already receive the Dallas Post may designate a gift recipient for their subscription.) Tournament director for the event is Jay Pope of Dallas Recreation Center, - assisted by Assistant Tournament Director Cindy Lefko. All tournament rulings will be made by the tourna- ment director and his word is final . on any dispute relating to the play of the tournament. Pope said the tour- nament will follow the rules of the U. S. Lawn Tennis Association and consist of single elimina- tion play in the best of three sets. In the évent of a tie with a set score at six games per player, the set will be decided by a nine point tiebreaker. Pope said all prelim- inary matches will be handled on a ‘‘call your own’’basis with the player nearest the ball having the final call. Line judges will be provided for the ‘final in each category. All tournament mat- ches will be played on Dallas Recreation Center courts on Burndale in Dallas Borough, said Pope, and the courts were recently resurfaced and provided with new nets. “I believe they're the best public courts in the area,” Pope noted. Pope said that limited seeding will be arranged so that the champions from last year’s Dallas Recreation tennis tourney will be in separate brackets. Dave Williams and Drew Regan were the 1978 champs in Dallas. The tournament director also emphasized that players who do not show for their assigned matches will forfeit. The match is open to all Back Mountain residents age 16 or older. The Back Mountain area includes the townships of Kingston, Franklin, Dallas, Jackson, Lake'and Leh- man and Noxen Township in Wyoming County plus Harveys Lake and Dallas boroughs. Entry blanks are available at the Rec Center, at Tupper’s Sporting Equipment in Dallas Shopping . Center Back Mountain National ‘Senior Girls softball team consists of girls from the Phillies, Dodgers, and Cardinals. All stars chosen were Lynn Busch, Joni Dom- bek, Shelly Daubert, Tricia Michael, Lisa Mikulis, Judy Sholtis from the Phillies; Christine Coombs, Raye Ann Hollitt, Donna Ide, Sherry Weaver from the Dodgers; Sue Bergevin, Katie and Patti O’Konski, Tracey Thomas from the Cardinals. Back Mountain American team consists of girls from Indians, Orioles, and the Yankees. Chris Dombek, Barb Eyet, Colleen ' Leaf, Kerrie Lehon, Chris i are from the ndians; Sue Gomba, Tammy Letteer, Mary Jo McLaughlin, Kim Reese, Debbie Shone from the Orioles; Colette Feeney, Colleen Morgan, Tammy Sutton, and Cindy Van. Kueran from the Yankees. Due to Sobeck and McLaughlin not being able to be here for the game Gigi Smith and Susan Evans were chosen to replace the girls. Back + Mountain American will play their first game, July 17 at Mountaintop at 6 p.m. Back Mountain. National pulled a bye for July 17 and will play their first game on July 19 against Exeter or Wyoming. This game will be played away. Sr. Girls Team results this week were Shaver- town Orioles over the Dallas Cardinals on July 2 Dallas Phillies took Dallas Indians 9-5 on July 3. Lynn Busch hurled for the Phillies. A triple, double were hit by Busch, a double by Shelly Daubert. RBI's were earned by Busch 4, Daubert 2, Judy Sholtis 1, and Alice Spencer 1. An outstanding double play was made by Cindy Silverman and Judy Sholtis. Indians hurler was Chris Combek Doubles by Colleen Leaf and Kerrie Lehon were their only extra base hits. RBI's were credited to Leaf 2, Chris Sobeck 1, and Barb Eyet 1. On July 5 the Shaver- town Yankees beat the Dallas Cardinals and July 6 the Shavertown Orioles beat the Lehman Dodgers. Due to game information sheets not turned in no detailed information was available. In Division I, on July 3 the Lehman Indians edged Dallas Orioles 6-5. Bille Jo Sorber hurled for the Indians. The Orioles hurler was Sharon Eyet. Kunkle won honors in the Farm Division of the Bob Horlacher Little League, finishing with a record of seven wins and one loss. Tournament Chairman Tupper stressed that everyone residing in the Back Mountain is en- couraged to participate in the tournament and will be ‘‘the winner’ of at least a ‘‘Tupper Cupper’’ tee-shirt and Post sub- scription. Entry forms and fees must be received by Tupper’s Sporting Equipment, Dallas Shopping Center, Route 309, Dallas, Pa. 18612 by July 20. Mini football and cheerleader registrations will be accepted on Sunday, July 15, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Dallas Junior High School. Back Mountain Junior Football Club announces football registrants must be between the ages of nine through 13. Anyone reaching his 14th birthday before Aug. 1 is not eligible. A copy of the birth certificate must be presented at registration and will be kept with the Club’s records. At least one parent must ac- company the applicant. Registration fee is $5, which covers the first mouthpiece, part of the insurance and physical examination. Cheerleader registrants must be 10, 11 or 12 years old. Registration fee is $3. A physician will be on hand to adminster physicals. Anyone missing this date will be responsible for obtaining his physical, at his own Back Mountain Major Little League All-Star teams are scheduled to play in the first round of tournament play this weekend. The Back Mountain American team will meet Northwest at home, July 14, at 6 p.m. If they win that game they will play their second game at home against their next opponent. If the Americans lose, they will drop to the B round and play away. If they lose their second game they are finished for this season. This evening's games will send Bob Sponseller’s Cook’s Owls against the Mr. Donut team at 7 on the Lehman diamond, after the Tupper’s Sporting Goods team takes on Grotto Pizza at ¢. Sponseller’s squad holds first place in the National Division of the league with an 11-1 record. Sponseller also managed the winning National All Stars. In other games this evening, Treat Drive-In meets Noxen Texaco at 6 and Columbia Porch Shades takes on Down Home Music at 7 on the Noxen diamond.
