Work on the $409,000 project began in October of last year when the under- ground and aerial portions of the cable were installed using much the same tech- niques as conventional copper cable installation. This project is funded in part by a research grant from the United States De- partment of Agriculture’s Electrification Administr- ation. Simple glass fibers were first used for image transmission in the 1930’s and the technology con- tinued to flourish during the 1960s. The rapid growth of communications in the 1970’s brought with it a host of new applications for con- ventional fiber optic assemblies. Today, fiber optic communications is the growing area of comm- unications technology. Among the advantages of fiber optic transmission are noise immunity, safety and security.
