Richards --Ed Rome didn’t waste any time getting back to his winning ways of 1977. Rome, who won a ton of golf events in '77 at Irem and took last season off, captured the Weckesser Cup at Irem Temple C.C. on Saturday with a one over par 73. Under the conditions it was a remarkable score. Tem Gauntlett, Jr. took the low gross with a 73. Second low net was Jack Mascioli, while Jim Alexander was third. Mascioli led his team to first place. Charlie Preece, Ed Scheldenberg and Andy Pawlenok rounded out the first place foursome. --Our congratulations to both the Wilkes golf team for winning the MAC championship and to the fine showing of King’s team, carded a eye-catching 69 recently in a match at Wyoming Valley. That’s one of the finest rounds ever --We had an enjoyable time at the Clarion St. wrestling banquet recently. Coach Bob Bubb’s team tied with Lehigh for first in our Eastern Mat Poll and will have possession of the revolving plaque until the start of next wrestling season. Lehigh and Clarion were voted the top dual meet teams in the East for the 1979 season. While at Clarion we had chance to watch Jack Davis fly his kite off Clarion River. Randy Miller, a seventh place winner in recent NCAA tourney, is another fine water skier. --Robin Fry was recently named to the coaching staff at Wilkes College and will assist with the womens roundball team. She’ll graduate from Pitt next month where she lettered four straight years on the Panther team. At Wilkes she’ll help with the recruiting and coaching. She was one of the top performers ever to play at Dallas. With her background and experience we know she’ll make a valuable contribution to the Wilkes program. --Irem Temple golfers will engage in the first member- guest tourney of the season next weekend. John Kennedy will play with Coach Gib Romaine of the University of Maryland and we’ll have Coach Terry Strock as our partner. It should be a fun weekend and we're looking forward to talking about football and attempting to make some birds and pars. --GAR’s Steve Gawlas, an outstanding linebacker, already has college coaches stopping by to give him theonceover. Steve will be a senior next season and is one of the leading prospects in the Valley. THE NFL DRAFT: Yes there were a lot of good football players around this past season. I can’t get over each year how the interest continues to grow over the NFL Draft. It’s to the point where the NFL could sell tickets and parade each draft choice in front of the crowd. I’ve got to do a little boasting about the Cowboys’ top choice, Robert Shaw, center, University of Tennessee. He's a great young man. If you’ll recall last football season we stated he was the best center in the game. We voted for him for All-American. But Robert didn’t get a lot of A-A honors. Prior to the Kentucky game we talked with him about the All-American teams. He said, “I know I won't get a lot of recognition simply because of our record. It hurts a little but I’ve got confidence in my own ability.” Last month when we visited Tennessee we com- plimented Robert on his performance in the All-Star games. He really showed a lot of people his outstanding 4 X 8 THERM-O-PLY SHEATHING SECONDS *2.00...... ability at coming off the football and sticking with the guy he was to block. Robert told us several teams showed a lot of interest i in him. The Pack and Lions especially. He felt he’d go in theg second round to the Lions. Robert is a very dedicated j talented performer. He'll play for the Cowboys. Meanwhile, we feel the Jets had one of the best drafts of any team in the NFL. If Michigan’s Bill Dufek is healthy, they’ll have a brilliant draft. Alambama’s Marty Lyons can run. He may look lean, but he’s got strength in his arms. PSU’s Eric Cunningham is a sleeper. He's a rugged blocker. The Packers have several ACC players. Maryland’s, Steve Atkins is capable of gaining a 1,000 yards, if he can play with pain. Charlie Johnson, the Terps fine defensive tackle, will make a solid noseman. He’s got the quickness and agility to play defensive end, too. Much to our surprise Alabama’s Jeff Rutledge didn’t go very high. He was projected to go in the first three rounds. Something must have went wrong someplace. Giants surprised in selecting QB Phil Simms of Morehead St. He was projected for rounds two to four. In QB rankings he was listed as No. 4 ahead of Joe Montana of Notre Dame, Steve Dills of Stanford and PSU’s Chuck Fusina. tion with the Giants. He’s got pro size and does a lot of things very well. His speed may hamper him though.” After going over the draft round by round and analyzing each players’ ability. We then compared it to one of the national scouting systems to get an even better handle on which teams appeared to get the best players. We’d rank them this way: 1-Browns, 2-Falcons, 38- Dolphins and Jets, with five teams tied for the next slot and they are: Bengals, Rams, Bears, Chiefs and Cowboys. The next group includes the Eagles, Bucs, Giants arid Colts. The highest rating a player can receive is an eight. There are 16 of that caliber. A total of 51 players were rated seven or above. There will be a bunch of optimisgac NFL people moving around the next couple of montits until the camps open. Come September a lot of these players will be out of work. Some will go from being a prospect to a plain suspect. LL girls track LLE LAWN RAKES 17" BAMBOO | 5295... Interior 4 X 8 DEC. PANEL SECONDS *2.25.....
