CADRLAC You pick At The He'll take it from CHAYSLER DATSUN FOR Game John and Doug by Lee L. Richards When Notre Dame plays a football game it is a major happening, an event, New Year's Eve. Notre Dame has more fans than any college football team that has ever played the game of football. There are those that be- lieve Notre Dame is foot- ball. The Mecca of football is in South Bend and it was started by the great Knute Rockne. Saturday was a prime example of the Irish’s drawing power as over 72,000 rolled into the finest the Meadowlands in New Jersey. They came to see the the Army. Despite poor coaching and a lack of the caliber of athletes which gave them a tough work- out. As many times as we’ve seen the Irish play in per- son they've yet to play an away game. Sure there is a mystique about Notre Dame with all its legends. They could fill a stadium in the middle of the desert on the hottest day of the year. Meanwhile, the Meadow- lands is just a fantastic place to watch a football game and the press facilities "are second to none. Notre Dame appeared to be lacking a player or two from being a great football team. They’ve got size and strength, but they may lack a step or two in the quickness department. They are very mechanical and proficient ‘in their “We were disappointed. Our kids played their poorest game of the year. They had very little in- tensity. We can’t un- derstand why...we thought we had them geared up for the game.” “We made a good showing‘ against Pittston and Nanticoke and we were optimistic about making GAR the big one. It was the game that counted. I have to give Rowlands a lot of credit. He had his boys ready for us and Dallas; they were geared for the Back Mountain.” “We thought our boys were ready. I can’t un- derstand their per- formance. We dropped a key pass in the beginning and the boys seemed to lose their spirit.” “Im concerned about Wyoming Area. They are a tough, physical team. Th- ey throw the ball well and they are fast. We have to re-group and get ready for the Warriors.” blocking schemes, but they lack that game-breaker at running back. Ken MacAfee is THE best tight end in football. Army’s Clennie Brundidge comes to catching and blocking ability. However, Ross Browner, last season’s most-deco- rated lineman hasn’t im- pressed us this season. Granted he’s a super player, but he’s getting doubled a lot and when the play does come his way he’s not really crunching people. Notre Dame people are pushing Browner for the Heisman which is ridi- culous. They’ve always been notorious for glamor- izing too many players. == Moose Krause; ‘ND ath- letic director, told ‘us, FROM or Dodge iB IGE ALLE DODGE “Ross has played except- how many people have tried to block him each week. Most of the teams are running away from him, too.” Nice try, Moose, but he still can’t play the option and is he really going all out??? The average Notre Dame fan still isn’t too pleased with Dan Devine as the head coach. He really doesn’t fit the Notre Dame image. Between Devine and Army’s Homer Smith they’d tie for second in a two-man personality con- test. It reflects on the field as neither can motivate their personnel. Should Notre Dame terminate. Devine’s . con- tract, the leading con- tender is Dolphins’ Don Shula. He wanted the post when Ara Parseghian bowed out. We've always felt there were two different kind of Notre Dame fans, the loyal worshippers and the ones that celebrate when ever the Irish take it on the chin. They don’t have in- betweeners. CLIPBOARD NOTES: We were one of five scribes helping to select the top offensive and defensive player of the game for the Irish Radio network and Lazy-boy Chairs...While we’ve never been a ND fan we always admired Coach Frank Leahy and still rank him as the No. 1 collegiate coach we’ve seen. Hewasthe “Master”’..We look for USC to hand Notre Dame its second defeat of the season this Saturday. Watched Lake-Lehman- GAR encounter on WNEP- TV Sunday morning and the Knights just couldn’t halt the passing = of Grenadiers’ Dan Kish in bowing 22-zip. GAR ap- pears to have Division 2 The fans were surprised at GAR’s seemingly easy defeat of the Knights. GAR led by only 6-0 at the half but the Grenadiers were moving the ball well and had twice as much yardage as the Knights at the half. The Grenadiers earned their six points on a four- yard run by Dave Griffith with two minutes remaining in the half. Ernie Slocum’s long punts and an interception by Jim Spencer were the only factors which kept the Knights in. fair field position in the first half. Early in the third period Dave Konsavage in- tercepted a Lake-Lehman pass on the Knights 35 yard line. Don Kish completed to Tom Doughter to the 11 yard line and two plays later Kish hit Doughter again for a touchdown. Kish’s pass to John Hen- derson for two points clicked and the Grenadiers Dallas got a fine effort: out of its front wall in rack- ing up a 28-20 win over Wyoming Area and ending scoring drought. The Pitt-Penn State foot- ball game has been swit- ched to Saturday, Nov. 26 at noon and ABC will carry it on the tube. It was slated for ‘Nov.’ 19...Pitt is reportedly very high on Meyers’ Charlie DeGraffenreid and is pre- pared to offer him a full- ride...Should he continue to improve his overall play and quickness, Jerry McDowell, Dallas lineman, could be the top prospect next season. We under- stand Jerry is working very hard with weights and is a firm believer in ‘a rugged conditioning 'pr-- ogram. That’s what it takes... Received our Football Writers Association of America All-American ballot last week and they’ve got enough guys nominated. How about 429? After checking out some of the positions we've come up with a couple of gems. listed. Penn State has three defensive linemen and NO linebackers up. Nittany Lions have total of eight but we can’t see them land- ing any... As usual Ohio State has five and they’ve got shot at landing three...How about 59 linebackers nominated were in the lead 14-0. GAR had four in- terceptions during the second half which stopped Lake-Lehman drives. It was an interception that set up the Grenadiers third and final touchdown of the game. Taking possession on his own 23 yard line, Kish led a nine play march for 77 yards for a touchdewn. His pass to Perry Tolbert was good and the Grenadiers were 22-0 on the board. GAR'’s defense kept the Knights’ Bert Balliet from scoring for the first time this season. : The win guaranteed GAR at least a tie for the Division II title. They need a win over Hanover Friday night to keep their last year’s crown. The’ Knights play Wyoming Area Friday night at the Warriors stadium with game time at 7:30 p.m. for just two slots??? Quarterbacks should be very interesting with eight of the top 10 pre-season selections gone for the sea- son. They lost some quality here. Here's top five schoolboy teams: 1-Nanticoke Area, 2-Meyers, 3-GAR, 4-Dallas, 5-Pittston Area. The Super Seven in the college ranks looks like this: 1-Michigan, 2-Texas, 3-Alabama, 4-USC, 5-Okla-. homa, 6-Ohio State, 7- Kentucky: GAR’s George Suda is playing second team line- backer at Oklahoma State. Meyers’ Mickey Dudish continues to start and per- form superbly for Mary- land Terps. Mick scored Wake Forest. a .
