We had a lot of bad calls. It was the worst officiating I have ever seen,” said Coach Rich Gorgone commenting on Pittston’s 19-18 win over his Lake-Lehman Knights, Monday afternoon, on a rain-soaked Lehman field. “I believe half the yard- age Pittston gained was on penalties. Even in the second half, the officials kept hitting us with penal- ties. It seemed just about every time we got a third down and a short distance they hit us with a penalty. “Our boys were ready to play football. It was Tavella’s kick conversion which was the deciding factor in the win. The Knights first touch- down came on a 20-yard pass from Bert Balliet to John Coulton, then a end zone by Balliet. The try for extra point was no good. In the second quarter, Balliet threw a long pass to Jim Spencer to put the Knights into Pittston terri- tory. A fake pitchout and a 26-yard run by Balliet gave the Knights their second touchdown. On the kickoff return, the Patriots went into the Knights territory on a series of downs. Good ground gains put them on the Knights 15 yard line. Sam Granteed carried to the one-yard line where Mike Ardoline took it over for the Patriots first touch- down. Tony Tavella kicked the extra point. With seconds remaining in the second quarter, Balliet connected with Spencer for a 21-yard pass and the Knights moved the score to 18-7. In the second half, the Patriots bottled up the Knights passing attack and the Back Mountain boys were unable to gain on the ground. Granteed carried the ball on a 50-yard run to the Knights 11-yard line. Ar- doline, on a quarterback sneak, took the ball over for a patriot score three plays later. With only six minutes re- maining in the fourth quarter, the Patriots moved into Knights terri- tory. Ardoline passed to John Timek to give Pitt- ston scoring position.
