Et & ® Dallas resident Earl Phillips, co-captain of Wesleyan University’s Cardinal basketballers, connected on eight of nine shots from the floor to help his team overcome a seven-point halftime deficit and defeat the Colby Mules, 63-50. Phillips had 20 points in the win. The Cardinals record was 10-2 as of Feb. 1: In 12 games, Phillips is second on the team in minutes played with 427%, of 480 total minutes. His field goal percentage is 47.1 and he is 82.9 percent from the free throw line, leading the team. He is averaging 11 points per game for the Cardinals and is also the team’s second leading rebounder with a 7.5 rebounds per game average. Down 41-29 at the end of the first half, the Dallas Mountaineers came to within four points of overtaking the Hanover Hawkeyes in the third period. But Hanover’s trio of Dave Evans, Mike Taylor and Norm Kirk- patrick helped the Hawkeyes pull ahead and defeat the Mounts, 78-64. Steve Skammer led the Mounts in the scoring, collecting 20 of his 27 points in (the second half. He tossed in eight goals from the floor and dumped in 11 from the foul line. Bruce Kunkle hit the double column with 12 points, four from the floor and four points from the foul line. ~ Dave Evans scored 22 of his 26 points in the first half for the Hawkeyes to give them their 12 point lead. He made 12 goals from the floor and picked up seven assists. Taylor tossed in eight goals from the floor and was fast on the rebounds. Kirkpatrick made six goals and com- pleted one from the foul line for 13 points. Dallas collected 18 of 25 fouls from the charity stripe while Hanover made four of eight attempts. The Mountaineers ended in fourth place with a 3-4 record. Ken Kuderka gave Dallas six points by win- ning on a default over Carl Vehonski. The Mountaineers’ hope for victory was dashed when 187-lb. Art Spears and heavyweight Vince Sodrosky lost on falls. Spears was turned over by McGlynn in 3:41 and Sodrosky was clamped by Bleich in 3:30. Both Spears and Sodrosky are new to the lineup this year. Sodrosky, former junior high cager, came out about five weeks ago. Coach Larry Schuler said he believes Sodrosky, a sophomore, has the potential to develop into a fine heavyweight. The Mountaineers meet GAR at the local high school Wednesday with junior varsity at 4 p.m., varsity at 5:30 p.m. Dallas Junior High matmen this past Saturday wrestled two matches back-to-back and won both. Meyers, 46-24, and Wilkes- Barre Twp., 43-38. Due to the energy crisis affecting the school’s athletic programs, some of the teams had as many as five matches to make up and as a result, a quad- meet was held on Feb. 5 at the Wilkes-Barre Townshi school. ? Four teams participated with each wrestling two matches in an effort to catch up to the schedule. The first whistle blew at 10 a.m. with G.A.R. pitted against Wilkes-Barre Township. This action was followed by two con- secutive matches; first between Dallas and Meyers then immediately afterward, Dallas against Township. By the toss of a coin, which Dallas lost, it was decided that they would be wrestle two matches in a row. f But the coin toss was the experienced that day. The young Mounts met the challenge head-on, scoring wins over both opponents. In spite of the fact that they had only a few short practice sessions since Dallas was the only team to come away undefeated. In their first encounter of the day, Dallas’ Sean Kavanagh provided the only fall for the Back Mountain team when he pinned his® opponent in 1:24. Mark Carter posted a lone major decision with his 10-1 victory and Dallas went on to capture six decisions with Rick Rogers, Dean McDavitt, 73 LTD Fred DiMaria, Steve Bittenbender, Bob Eyet and Scott Rosenberg each contributing ~ fine per- formances. Scott Asby, Scott Enslen and Jeff Sodrosky posted the last wins on forfeits and in the final count, Dallas was on top by a score off 46 to 24. The Wilkes-Barre Township-Dallas match followed with Dallas taking command after five matches, building a lead they never relinquished. The junior matmen turned in three crucial falls with Bob Eyet clamping his opponent in a record 18 seconds. Sean Kavanagh offered his second fall of the day overpowering his adversary in 3:47. The third six-pointer was provided by Scott Asby when he proved too much muscle for a tough township opponent and pinned him in 1:38. Rick Rogers turned in a fine showing with his 18 to 2 superior decision while DiMaria, Steve Bit- tenbender and Scott Enslen supplied wins via the decision route. Norman Bordley battled to a 2-2 draw and Mark Carter won by forfeit. The final score was 43-38 in Dallas’ favor and boosted their record to 5-0. The two-match recap found eight Dallas matmen posting wins in each of the victories. Adding = the double wins to their existing records were Scott Asby, Steve Bittenbender, Mark Carter, Fred DeMaria, Scott Enslen, Bob Eyet, Sean Kavanagh and Rick Rogers. Wrestling Club to victory over the Wilkes- Barre YMCA, 44-17. The Wilkes-Barre YMCA team was comprised 80 percent of boys formerly coached by Hennebaul and Walko. The Back Mountain wrestling team coaches had figured it would be a close match but the local wrestlers showed some excellent spirit in their matches as they turned back the YMCA team. Jeff Austin and Tracey Slocum scored pins while superior decisions were gained by John Walko and Greg Dukinas and major decisions by Mike Borton and Ricky Hennebaul. The junior varsity team won also. Wyoming Valley Dirt Riders, a non-profit group of motorcycle enthusiasts, will. sponsor a ‘hare scramble’ on Sunday starting at noon on the four and one-half mile course at the Carverton Dirt Cycle. The ‘hare scramble’ is a woods motorcycle race, Lake-Lehman Knights lost to Crestwood cagers 79- 69 for their third defeat ending the first half in third place, tied with the Comets and Hanover. Leading at the end of the Riding-Ho by Lynn Heller The officers for the Riding-Ho 4-H club for 1977, were chosen at the Feb. 7th business meeting. The results are as follows: president, Lynn Lewis; vice-president, Debbie Cornell; recording secretary, Judy Lem- mond; corresponding secretary, Sandy Russell; treasurer, Gail Heller. Debbie Cornell and Tonja Spencer presented demonstrations. A winter activities committee including Lynn and Clarke Lewis, Gail Heller, Judy Lemmond, Sandy Russell, and Wendy Grey was set up to organize an activity for the winter months. About 60 riders are ex- pected to participate and trophies will be awarded with one trophy for every four riders participating. Bert Balliet and Dave Rushin led the Knights in scoring and the team went into the final quarter with the score tied at 52-each. Eric Pierzchala led the Comets in scoring and tossed in 13 of his 22 points in the final frame to pace Crestwood to its 10-point win. Frank Gramazio scored five of his 19 points in the final period. Norm McCaffrey had 11 points for the Knights. The Knights hit for 11 of 19 at the foul line with Crestwood making 19 of 27 from the charity stripe.
