He graduated with highest honors. from the Academy. ; or ape LLHS band receives honors John Miliauskas, director of the Lake- Lehman High School Band, announced this week that the Knights Band has received All American- Hall of Fame Honors from Purdue University in recognition of ‘‘out- standing musical dedication and service.” The band was awarded with a certificate of honor which will be placed in the showcase among their numerous other awards. With the fall marching season completed the band is busy preparing a concert to be given in April. Members of the band front are also practicing for an annual competition to be held in March. Following the concert, the band will take to the road again to appear in several spring parades and competitions. On Wednesday, Jan. 5, the psychology classes at Dallas Senior High School under the supervision of Jay Pope, psychology teacher, and Edward Potera, school librarian, witnessed the work and studies of mental retardation taking place at White Haven State School and Hospital, now known as the White Haven Center. Approximately 65 students toured the facilities. The students were shown the speech and hearing center, the therapeutical ~~ workshop, various classrooms, dietary facilities, gymnasium and the pool. All of the facilities are used quite frequently by the patients throughout the day for educational, Cub. The majority of the 800 residents at the center are over 21 years of age and these patients participate in adult education similar to a kindergarten or first grade class. Patients under 21 are trained in special education to dress themselves, wash, ete. The doors of the patients’ rooms are not locked and they are allowed certain freedoms in an effort to increase their level of responsibility. A good percentage of the residents have been at the center since birth. Sherlock, assisted by state and local officials, today broke ground for the second section of the Cross Valley Expressway near Wilkes-Barre. This section, a 2.2 mile highway,. will cost $14.6 million to build. It will run from Route 309 in ‘Courtdale Borough to Rutter Avenue in Kingston Borough where it will connect with the bridge across the North Branch of the Susquehanna River, currently under construction. The expressway will eventually connect Route 115 near the Veterans Hospital in Wilkes-Barre. ‘The new highway 1s designed to reduce traffic congestion on Route 309, which presently runs through the streets of Wilkes-Barre and the boroughs across the river. Construction of the second section is scheduled to take three years. The project also goes through the Boroughs of Pringle, Luzerne and Forty-Fort. Construction will be done by Number One Contracting Corp., of West Pittston.
