RICHARDS
by Lee L. Richards
Lake-Lehman went down
to its first defeat of the
season to a good Meyers
team Saturday night, 20-13,
while Dallas bowed to
Pittston Area in the af-
ternoon, 34-12.
After two straight wins,
Coach Rich Gorgone’s
Knights tasted defeat.
They gave the Mohawks all
they could handle and led
at the half, 7-6. Meyers is
still unbeaten and appears
headed for a showdown
with Pittston Area for the
title.
Jim Spencer scored the
first TD after a good drive.
Bob Weidner kicked the
PAT and was injured
which had an affect on the
Knights’ defense in the late
going. Mark DeCesaris
flipped to Ed Oncay for the
other tally.
Coach Gorgone said,
‘We had our chance to win.
The kids played very well.
We thought it was a good,
hard football game. We
knew Meyers was a big
play team. They made
some big plays and won.”
Lake-Lehman’s line did a
consistent job in blocking
the Mohawks on running
plays for Jack Swire, Jack
The past two .weeks
found the following wins in
the Imperialette League.
Dallas Dairy picked up
three points from Atlas
Frozen Foods but the week
before dropped alll to
Ralph Fitch & Sons.
Goodman Florist took
three points from
Pesacreta’s after losing
four to Lombardo Bakery.
Fairview Shoe Store
earned three from Ralph
Fitch & Sons after shutting
out Atlas Frozen Foods the
previous Friday. Carmen’s
Pizza took three from
Pesacreta’s, then came on
to. blank Lombardo
Barkery.
High scorers
weeks’
in both
matches were P.
Radzinski 178 (478), Jean
Agnew 184 (471), B. Roan
192 (485), M. Ritts 177-190
(525), P. Bicking 170 and
M. Morris 186. The week
previously J. Agnew hit 196
(485), J. Bolinski 185, and
M. Fondo 172.
In the George Shupp
League, Daring’s Market
took three from Harris
Associates. Dallas Dairy
dropped four points to
Automatic Vending despite
J. Stedny’s 212 (580) and N.
Stredny’s 569 series. D.
Eddy posted 565 and B.
Gosart rolled 212 for the
vending men. L.
Christensen’s 218-227 (639)
and R. Bonomo’s 214 (601)
paced Fino’s to a shut out
over Stanton TV. J. Merc
aided with 210. Irene’s Bar
Zaleskas and Jim Spencer
to plow through.
Gorgone had special
praise for Dana Sutliff,
Don Jones, Dave Mahle,
Bill Lavelle and Bob
Cumens. They exploded off
the ball and helped Knights
gain around 285 total
yards.
Knights have an open
week in which they can
regroup and prepare for
another rugged encounter
with Nanticoke Area.
Meanwhile, Coach Jack
Jones hasn’t lost three
games in-a-row since
around his first year at the
helm. Things aren’t
looking too good. Dallas
obviously lacks the ex-
perience to cope with the
clubs which have whomped
them to date.
Jones says, ‘‘We’re
working on the areas
where we must improve if
we're to win, but when in
game condition our people
just haven’t executed. We
hope to show some im-
provement.

final...Right now college
football is unpredictable.
Only five teams from a
consensus of seven pre-
season polls are un-
defeated. Ohio State got
bumped by Missouri. We
kinda felt they would have
problems with Tigers and
this week with UCLA. We
still believe they’ll whip
Michigan in final...By
drawing straws here’s our
Top 10: 1-Oklahoma, 2-

College.
Missed the opportunity
last Friday to visit with
Indiana’s roundball genius,
Bob Knight. Bob flew into
Syracuse and was met at
airport by Jack Gallagher.
The two then picked to
make a couple of visits
enroute to Cherry Hill, N.J.
where Coach Knight was
slated to lecture at hoop
clinic. Knight flew from
Philly to Toronto next
morning where he spoke
again. He always has been
one of the most popular
coaches for clinics....Well
the Phillies finally won the
National League East.
They deserved it. Pitt-
sburgh didn’t play con-
sistently enough during the
early part of the season.
Pirates did make a strong
bid late, but it would have
been a shame if they had
won...Reds and Phillies
will be a wild playoff. Right
now we can’t pick a win-
ner...Our weekend was a
bit sad when we learned on
Friday of the passing of
former Army defensive
coordinator, Dick Lyon.
Dick was very popular in
Wyoming Valley. He was
the man who put Ithaca on
the football map. He
moved on to West Point
under Coach Tom Cahill.
Dick stayed at our home on
his trips to Pennsylvania.
He left Army four years
ago to accept a fine job at
RPI where he was in
charge of all the athletics.
Dick was 51...Bob Saul has
been very happy with his
Rutgers gridders thus far
Bob had
Rutgers assistant, Bill
Speranza, out to Irem for a
round of golf just before
practice started. Scarlet

foothall game between
Army and North Carolina
last Saturday. While we
weren't at all impressed
with Army in its initial two
starts, QB Leamon Hall did
impress with his throwing
versus Tar Heels when he
set new marks in com-
pleting 28 of 55 for 385
yards. Clennie Brundidge,
the slick tightend, hauled
in 8 for 112 yards and one
score. Hall fired four TD
passes. In three games
Hall has hit on 63 of 118 for
824 yards and 7 scores.
Army had two shots to beat
Tar Heel Couldn’t believe

Mike Gorham had praise
for the Lake-Lehman
