Born and raised in North Carglina, where her father owned a furniture business, Bea attended Atlantic Christian College and the former East Baar Pies watery . a, Carolina Teachers College. She taught school in North Carolina for a year until she left for New York State in 1933 where she taught occupational therapy. While living in New York State, she met Don LaBar, auto body work in Orange- burg, N.Y. In 1939, they were married and resided in New York until 1946 when they returned to Dallas, where Don was born, and raised, and Don opened his Following Don’s first year in business, Bea took over the bookkeeping and estimate work for her hus- band and continued work- ing at the shop until 1961 when a broken leg caused her to remain at home and do the book work. In 1968, major surgery forced her to retire entirely from the business responsibilities. Unable to remain inac- tive, four years ago Bea began working part time in the circulation department of the Post and continues to do so a few days each week. She has a son, Cecil P. Hinnant, who lives in Greenville, N.C., and four granddaughters, of whom she is justly proud. Three are married and the fourth is a senior in high school. She also has three great granddaughters, whom she visits each year. Bea’s daughter-in-law and granddaughter both are employees of East Carolina Teachers College, the school she attended. Bea's first love is cook- ing and she is especially fond of trying new dessert recipes. Her recipe files are a clearing house for new and unusual culinary creations from all sections of the country. She is ever ‘ready to try something new or different. She is a natural organ- izer which serves her well in her work as well as in her interest in helping the out-of-doors and her large, beautiful year at- tests to her ability and the time she devotes to it. Bea does her own sew- ing. She used to do a lot of crocheting and embroider- ing but seldom does either anymore. She enjoys her work, her home and her many friends and her boundless energy puts many of her younger friends to shame. Above all, she is the per- fect, gracious, charming Southern hostess when she entertains friends in her attractively furnished home. ot Below, Bea LaBar shares some of her favorite dessert recipes with Post readers.
