Four and possibly five members of Dallas Senior High School will go to the state championships next week on the tartan turf at «Shippensburg State The top two finishers in each event at the District II track night qualified. John Majewski, Mike McGroarty, Jim Swepston, Pete Shiner, and perhaps, Harry Vroomen will make the trip in an event to bring home a track title. The Dallas cinderman finished third in the team scoring behind Meyers and GAR in Class AA of the districts where records fell by the wayside as they usually do when the men run on the Spartan turt. Eight new records and one tie were set in the AA class. In the 880 yard run, the first five finishers broke last year’s record of 2:00.6 set by Roger Be — VE Sherman of Dallas. Meyers’ W. Brew came in first with a time of 1:56.2, then John Green of GAR 1:58.2. Harry Vroomen, 1:58.4; M. Jamilkowski, Hanover 1:59.3, and Dunmore’s Chris Grega 1:59.5. A unique situation exists in this event in that Coach Clint Brobst of Dallas remembered an old rule in the state which specifies that if a finisher has a fantastic record, it can be submitted to Harisburg. The state than takes all the times for that event around the state and if the finisher is within the first ten times, he qualifies for state. Thus, opportunity to compete in the state championships this weekend. Jim Swepston of Dallas came in second in the 330 Intermediate Hurdles with aS numbers and gymnastics. a time of 43.1 behind Hanover’s Neal Naemy who set a new record 40.9, breaking his brother’s record of 41.5. John Majewski set a new record of 6-6 in the high jump breaking his previous record of 6-3. Mike McGroarty finished second with 6 feet. Pete Shiner came in second in the discuss for Dallas with a distance of 138.2 feet. Other men placing from Dallas were Tom Kearney, fifth, mile run; Tim Cross, 220 yd. dash, fifth; Dallas relay team, third, two mile relay. Bill Sennick, Tom Snell, and Mike Gennetts will represent Lake-Lehman at states. Sennick placed first in the discus with a distance of 141-10." Snell came in second in the triple jump behind Scott Readler of Crestwood, and Gennetts placed second bhind Meyers’ Bill Joseph who set a new record of 181-11 in the javelin event. Others finishing in the top five for the Knights were Paul DeBarry, fifth, 120 yd. hurdles; Pete Sharp, third, two mile run; Relay team, fifth, two mile relay; and Mark DeCesaris, fifth, pole vault. Lake-Lehman Knights dropped a 6-1 game to St. John’s and a 6-4 contest with Crestwood to drop from fifth to sixth place in Division II of the Wyoming Valley Baseball Con- ference. St. John’s went out in front 2-0 in the bottom half of the first inning. The Knights came back with one run in the second in- ning when Bert Balliett came in from third on a ground out to the infield. It marked their lone run of the game. The Johnnies’ Pellegrini Dallas Mountaineers lead Division II of the Wyoming Valley Baseball Conference with a 9-2 record and both those losses were to GAR. In a game that went nine innings, Friday, at the Mounts’ field, the Grenadiers edged the Mountaineers 2-1 scoring their winning run in the top of the ninth. Both teams were scorless until the top of the seventh when GAR'’s Breese went to first on a shortstop’s error in the infiled. He went to second on the next player’s walk and made the score 1-0 when he came across the plate on Elmy’s single to the outfield. held the Knights to four hits and drove out a double and a single to help win his own ball game. Frank Baldiga and Bob Murphy had two singles each in four times at bat and each scored a run. Catcher J. Dorbad knocked out a long triple. x Pellegrini struck out eight and walked one. Chris Yanchik fanned four and walked four. In Wednesday's game with the Comets, the Knights took a one run lead in the second inning but Crestwood picked up two with a single by Jeff Supulski, a sacrifice down the first base line by Brian Sickler and a long double by Ray Smith, scoring Supulski. Banks walked the next batter to fill the bases but Dallas left the runners stranded. Both teams with the score 1-1 in the ninth, Breese struck out for GAR but went to first on the catcher’s error. Griffiths knocked out a single and right fielder Bromfield singled to bring in Breese for a 2-1 score. The Mounts hopes rose when, with two out, Supulski got on on an error. Their hopes were short- tallies in their top half of the third to go out in front. The Comets went ahead 4-1 in the top half of the fourth by bringing two more runs across the plate. The Knights rallied in the bottom half of the fourth to score two runs, then brought in another run in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. Powerful hitting by the Comets gave them two runs in the top of the sixth to give them their winning 6-4 score. Powlowski, Mudlein and lived when southpaw Steve Skammer hit a long drive to the outfield pulled in by Wysocki for the third out and a second win by GAR over Dallas. It was a pitcher’s contest with Banks giving up seven hits and . Skammer only four. But GAR’s out- standing defense was the Dallas nine’s downfall. Their outfielders turned in a stellar performance. In Wednesday's ‘game with Hanover, pitcher John Reese set the tempo for the Zearfoss drove out triples for the Comets. R. Espe knocked out a double. Chris Yanchik, first baseman, hit a double for the Knights. Pitcher Mudlein allowed seven hits for the Knights. Slocum gave ‘up nine hits for the Comets. Mudlein fanned six and gave up six free walks. Ernie Slocum struck out two and walked eight. The Knights played GAR Monday, meets West Side Tech Thursday and will play Dallas at home Friday. Misericordia plans tennis instruction College Misericordia will offer two sessions of tennis lessons again this summer, to be instructed by Miss Sara Gregory, physical education instructor at the college and Coach of the tennis team. The first session is scheduled to be held from June 21 through July 9, while the second will be held from July 12 through July 30. There will be two sections in each session. Registration is being held at the college now. Mountaineers by striking out seven and driving out a double to lead Dallas in a 6- 1 victory over the Hawkeyes. The Mountaineers scored six runs on the five hits but walks and errors played a major role in the win. Reese held the Hawkeyes to fourhits and he had gone defensive play behind him. Skammer pitched a two- hitter on Monday to keep the Mountaineers in the lead as they shut out PAGE NINE round-up June 19-20 At its recent meeting, the Noxen-Monroe Sportsman Club selected June 19 and 20 for its Fourth Annual Rattlesnake Round-up to be held on the club grounds located in Noxen. Last years’ hunt saw in excess of 100 snakes captured and entered in the contest. Two contestants were bitten and required hospitalization. Registration to become a contestant will begin at 5 p.m. on June 18, and continue through the hunt Saturday and Sunday. Prizes will be awarded for the largest and smallest rattlesnake, the most rattlesnakes, and the rattlesnake having the most rattles. There will not be an admission charge to the club grounds. For the early hunters, breakfast will be served on the club grounds Saturday and Sunday beginning at 5:30 a.m. All snakes must be captured alive and unharmed. All snakes captured become the property of the Sportsman Club and will be released in their natural habitat by the club at a later date.
