RN —— Sir TIT PAGE EIGHT Karin Hennings of Heilbornn, Germany, and Sara Barakat of Dallas, have become close friends brought about by a business meeting of their fathers. . Months ago, Klaus Hennigs, Karin’s father visited the RCA plant at Crestwood Industrial Park to sell equipment, while there he met Sara’s father, Anees Barakat, an engineer with RCA. During their = con- versation they learned both had daughters of the same age. Each felt their daughter had some things in common with one another. So they decided it would be a good experience for them to visit one another and learn the cultures and customs of each other’s country. | The men discussed their plan in detail and arrangements were made for Sara to spend seven weeks with the Hennigs in Germany. Sara was fascinated with the idea and not long after the end of the school year she left for her visit with the Hennigs. The Hennigs met Sara at the airport and she went home with them to Heilbornn near Stuttgart for her seven week visit. While in Germany she and Karin toured Ulm, Munich, Bavaria, (described by Sara as mostly farmland), Heidelberg, Amsterdam, and Austria. They also spent two weeks in Italy and while there visited Venice. Sara found the people and way of living in Ger- many much more formal than in the United States. Parents were much more strict than most American parents and schools more advanced. Gate of Heaven Girl Scout troops have year. Leaders of Brownie troop 696 are Mrs. Donald and Mrs. Richard Kindler. The large 747 in which the girls traveled from Europe to New York impressed Karin, who hopes someday to become Karin is amazed at the informality and casualness of the American people. She found it much easier to become a friend of Sara’s than with the girls in Germany. ‘““‘America is so dif- ferent,”” she said. The homes are much lower than ours at home..and there is so much space between the houses. We don’t have so much green grass either but we have many more flowers in our yards. I miss the flowers.” asked a question answer simultaneously. Sara and Karin have become close friends through their visits with one another but both agree that ‘‘it is nice to visit one another’s country but would rather live in their own.” SERVING INDUSTRY MAHAFFEY OIL CO. In Germany she is in the 10th class which is equivalent to the 11th grade at Dallas High School where she is going to school with Sara. The informality between the teachers and students amazes her. When asked which school system she preferred, Karin gave it serious thought before she decided she liked the discipline and educational system in Heilbornn. Football, cheerleaders and the band are entirely new to her. At home, they have a school orchestra which plays only for special occasions such as the Easter and Christmas holidays. _ Most sports are not a part of the school curriculum and the students must pay for them. She enjoys American sports and in Germany she is interested in art and music. Karin has already learned to speak Latin, German, French and English and when she returns home will study Spanish. In the German schools it is compulsory to study English. She enjoys American food and describes it as much sweeter than at home. Her favorite, like most young people, are hamburgs. She also likes American hot dogs which are different than. in Germany. Karin is impressed by the various areas of the United States she has seen but cannot say which city she liked best. She and Sara both agree, however, that they like suburban living best. Like Karin, Sara enjoys sports as a spectator and likes music but her future ambition is to become a lawyer. Both girls have much in common as is apparent in conversations with them. They are quiet but have a keen sense of humor. They enjoy traveling but like spending time at home.
