Snowdon Jr., ’55. |} Bill Koehl, Dallas; Wallace F. only the taxpayers of the municipalities using such service would be taxed for it.”’ Act 62, the State legislation that enables the adoption of home rule makes clear that should a county under home rule adopt a service on a county-wide basis, (police protection for example), the township or municipality must parti- cipate in the service unless it already provides it. If it does not already provide the service it must join in the county system or take steps to provide it them- selves. Some rural townships may not already have the service and may not want it but they would be forced into it. Marie Gentilesco, Mountaintop, heads a committee against the charter. Her group opposes the charter, basically, because they feel it is an attempt at re- gionalization. She equates it with the “mess’’ created by consolidation of schools, feels it is being pushed by a group of liberal intellectuals called ‘1313 Chicago,” does not like the idea of regional police, fears the replacement of elected officials with appointed ones, and thinks that the major population centers of the county will ultimately run it. Mrs. Gentilesco said home rule will gradually eliminate local government. But there is nothing in: Act 62 which pre- cludes establishment of home rule in a township or municipality, (Kingston Township put their own through in the spring primary), and setting it up as they see fit. Over 3,000 Back Mountain ‘citizens Scott Enslen, 11-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Enslen, 147 Howell Road, RD 7, Shavertown, competed against an opponent from Rahway, N.J., in the area punt, pass and kick competition in his age group, Oct. 27, at the Yale Bowl, New Haven, Conn. The event was held during the Giants pro-football game. After defeating 4,500 youths throughout the United States to qualify as one of the two area finalists, Scott was runner-up to the Rahway youth. The Back Mountain boy won in three contests prior to traveling to Connecticut last weekend, the most recent the district competition at Dover, N.J. He was sponsored by the Luzerne Motor Company and he and his parents were weekend guests of the Ford Motor Company. They were accompanied by James McCabe, manager of Luzerne Motor Co., and John Bugdonovitch, sales representative. The winner of the area competition will compete in the division contest at an NFL game, Dec. 15, and the winner of that contest will advance to the finals to be held Dec. 29. Scott is a sixth grade student at Dallas Intermediate School and is the first Back Mountain youth to advance to the area contest. College Misericordia’s newly formed Circle K. Club was formally inducted into the Kiwanis organization last week in ceremonies conducted at the Irem Temple Club by the Dallas Kiwanis Club. During the ceremonies, district lieu- tenant governor Charles Charles of- ficially welcomed each of the 45 Misericordia students who comprise the Circle K Club. Kiwanis means service, Mr. Charles told the students. Kiwanis member George McCutcheon then outlined the responsibilities of each of the club’s officers as he introduced Jay Brown as president, Kathey Wolfe as vice and Nancy Cullen as secretary. Miss Wolfe responded to Mr. Mec- Cutcheon’s remarks and formal installa- tion, indicating that the club is off to a good start as one of the largest on Miseri- cordia’s campus. Sister Miriam Francis Stadulis, RSM, and Michael Greico, both of College Misericordia, were introduced as the club advisers. ~ At the conclusion of the induction cere- mony, each of the Circle K. members were called before the lectern to receive a Circle K pin. The club has already completed two projects since its formation at Miseri- cordia. Two weeks ago, members met at a barn which was formerly used as a storage area for paper drives and cleaned the premises. To raise initial operating funds, the club sold cider on campus. The groups were divided into four categories. Candle Light Will Welcome Christ Child The Ladies Auxiliary of the Dallas Fire and Ambulance Inc. announces that Nov. 1 is the final day for ordering Christmas luminaries. Helen Newberry, chairman, invites Back Mountain residents to join in lighting candles in front of their homes on Christmas Eve. This custom of welcoming the Christ Child has been growing in the area for the past six years. Ribbons of light can be seen for many miles, and the ribbon will include most of the Back Mountain communities this year, through the ef- forts of the ladies auxiliary. Residents can obtain luminary sets by contacting the following auxiliary members: Mrs. Newberry, 675-1712; Shirley Smith, 675-2801; Eleanor Krash- kevich, 675-2335. Each set contains 12 candles, bags, and sufficient sand and will cost $1.50. Candles are to be placed on front of the home near the road, and they are to be lit at 6 o’clock Christmas Eve. Candles will burn for eight to 10 hours.
