Engineer Suggests ‘Natural’ Christmas traditionally known as the season of lights-in and around homes, offices, city streets and large commercial displays. But this year, because of the energy crisis, many utility companies in Pennsylvania are dis- couraging the use of any out- door lighting displays. Inside the home, the cus- tomary = Christmas tree, arrayed with colorful lights, is also subject to energy con- servation. Extension agri- cultural engineer at The Penn- sylvania State University, Gerald Bodman, points out that the average Christmas tree has about Wight on it. These 36 lights use about 900 watts of electricity and the cost to operate it ranges from between 2 and 3 cents an hour. Mr. Bodman suggests this year you consider some alter- natives to decorating your tree with many small Christmas lights. For example, you could place one 150 watt flood light near the center of the base of the tree, along with a small electric fan running on slow speed. The fan will create some air movement and cause spark- ling ornaments on the tree to move slightly. The overall effect canbe just as beautiful as a tree loaded with lights and it will cost you less to operate. The flood light and small fan will use about 250 in average tree with 36 lights. ose W.
