: Backstage With Sylvia by Sylvia S. Cutler Smulowitz’s eyes backstage at the conclusion of ‘‘Applause’’, and tears in the eyes of her daughter, Michele. This writer focused the camera and got a shot of them, but somehow the moment was too intimate, as the girl murmured ‘Mommy, Mommy, you were great,” and the mother said ‘Baby, Baby.” It was near hysteria as actors congratulated each other, and friends congratulated them. The performance opening night was worth. all of that...it was good. Roz as Margo Channing was merely terrific. Granted that Roz hasn’t all that good a voice...but neither did Gwen Verdun in ‘Sweet Charity.” Yet it isn’t voice that makes a star. It’s stage pre- sence. It’s ‘charisma’. Roz has all of that. She looked fantastic in cos- tume after costume, with the red sequin gown of the finale draping that unbelievable figure. What was believable was the character as Roz play- ed it. Authorative. Praise be, she had Margo down pat. Were it-a professional cast, were it professional theatre, this re- viewer would say the play was in for a long run. Warren D. Cox as Bill Samp- son was handsome and endear- ing, and Cathy Roccograndi as Eve Harrington was authentic and lovely, and her sweet so- prano voice was a delight to hear. Walter Mitchell lent real backbone to the role of Howard Benedict, the producer, and when he gave Eve “what for”, we almost cheered. (Eve was a bitch...Cathy got that across derson as Duane Fox and I liked Dawne Roberts as Karen Rich: ards. Dominick Mistrot as the the plot. Linda Sipple as Bonnie head- ed a chorus line of show biz gyp- ‘sies and gave several hearty production numbers, choreo- graphed swingingly by Robert Niznik, both director and choreographer. This type of show is Bob’s meat, his forte. He does it well. I especially en- joyed the nightclub scenes with the buzz, buzz, buzz of conver- sation. That’s real Broadway. Of course, realize that we're not dealing with a professional troupe, although a few have had professional experience; not- ably Bob Niznik as director- choreographer in New York shows, and Chris Anderson, who was in the original “Applause”, but they were darned good. Linda Sipple, for instance, is a show stopper. We're aware of the fact that our beloved Linda is inches too short for a chorus line, and a wee bit ‘‘zoftig’’, but personality overcomes all, and she is “loved” by the audience. They do put across energy and __ the feeling of enjoyment, even though we know they're work- ing hard up there. Lillian Alinkoff, Roz’s close in June she started ‘‘nudging” Roz to try out for the part. - “Don’t bother my head,” Roz told her. But ultimately, after Lil’s nagging, Roz went to the tryouts and won the part hands down. It was then that impre- of his ‘‘contacts’ in New York try on Alexis Smith's original play, and this Roz did. With slight alterations the costumes fit, and they were indeed fabu- lous. Set design and set decoration were superb, this the job of Ray Linares, Ron Roberts and Al Niznik. Properties and furnish- these the responsibility of Ed Goman, Michael Lloyd and Walter Mitchell. It was a great show. Little Theatre is back on the road to glory.
