Nick Taddei brought several cars to be featured in the Soap Box Derby. Drivers were asked questions about the derby. Refreshments were provided for all who attended. This was just one of many events featured in this. year’s summer recreation program. A movie will be shown Aug. .14 titled: ‘The Moods of: Surfing’’, and a color cartoon parade. Each of these activities were categorized according to age three winners in each group. All winners. received sold certificates with first place taking a wooden champ medal. Activities began early and at v Field trips are also scheduled. The next one, held Aug. 10, will be to the Luzerne County Court House. Swetland’ Homestead, Wyoming = Monument, = and Mesaros ‘Antiques. ! A bag lunch will be required for the trip. children 9 through 14. are eligible to go. Many unusual arts and crafts are. also taught at the play- ground. Printmaking will be featured next, week. The youngsters will learn how: to cut and make their own plates. The public is invited to attend. Francine DeFrantesco; Hazleton, was the grand winner Saturday afternoon at Carver- {on Heights. Francine, winner of the B division run-offs, was challenged by Tom Borthwick, Old Forge. winner of the A divi- sion run-offs, in the final ex- citing heat of the day. The derby. sponsored by the Kingston Township Recreation Committee, was held along Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Starting time -was slated for noon, but a delay in'the delivery of "bales of hay delayed the starting time until 1 p.m. Thirty boys and girls from Scranton. Hazleton, Wilkes- Barre. and Back Mountain areas competed for the winning crown as excited spectators lined the quarter mile track. The track was: prepared by the Kingston Town Dip road department. and while contest- ants held trial runs for five nights previous. to the derby, Kingston Township and State Police blocked off traffic. The Shavertown Fire Company handled food concessions and the Kingston Township ambul- ance and crew were ready for any emergency. Each car plus driver must weigh 250 pounds or less. The cars must have standard wheels and must be built by the driver. Girl Scouts The final session of resident camping for the summer. of '73 is currently in progress for Girl Scouts of Penns Woods Council. Over 75 girls are part of this last session at Camp Louise, located seven miles north of Berwick. A varied program ' of ac- tivities has been scheduled for the campers in addition to planning’ within the various units, Birches; Whippoorwill, Yakima, Hemlock and Needles. "the direction of American Red Cross trained personnel. Attending from the Back Mountain region are Elizabeth DeWitt, Karen ' Pickarski, Dallas; Beth Hall, Christine Jenkins, Shavertown and Jean Marie Petro, Trucksville. Drivers may have help with painting and lettering. The derby was divided into two parts, A division for 13 to 15 year olds and B division for 10 to 12 year olds. Boys and girls were eligible. There were three girls in this year’s race. Six members of the Dallas School District audio-visual aids crew stood by under the direction of Dr. Alfred Camp, to videotape the race for future viewing. Two groups filmed the beginning and finish of the race and ‘one roving crew covered the spectators and grounds. Jon’s also donated the - truck and Judge Arthur Dalessandro, Nick Taddei, and George Gilbert of WARM served as announcer. Special trophies. went to the following: first runner-up, Tom Borthwick; Queen of the Derby, Francine DeFrancesco; King, Jim Deffarao, Scranton; Wayne award.
