Unravel As spring urges the earth to awaken, the mysteries of its creatures once again intrigue our minds. Two books recently added to the children’s collection in the annex of the Back Mountain Library will help to unravel some of the secrets of the green turtle and the habits of many varieties of snakes. John F. Waters’ book “Green Turtle Mysteries’’ tells how these giant turtles live, what dangers threaten them and what scientists are doing to pro- tect them. The turtles travel thousands of miles in the ocean and yet return to the same beach where they were born to lay their eggs. The young hatch and head directly for the ocean but nobody knows how they find their way. These and many other facts about the turtles are found in Mr. Waters book which is handsomely illustrated by Hawaiin artist, Mamoru Funai. “The Curious World of Snakes” by Alfred Leutscher dispels some common beliefs about snakes. For instance snakes do not sting with their tongues nor do they have slimy skins. The first part of the book is devoted to the life and habits of snakes in general. The second part describes in more detail certain types of snakes all over the world: the pythons of Asia that can be made into pets, the huge anacondas and boa con- strictors of South America and the deadly mambas of Africa among many others. Alfred Leutscher is well qualified to write on the subject of snakes. He was co-founder and first Secretary of the British Herp- etological Society and is now a natural history lecturer for the British Government.
