\ Around the corner at Kingston Corners is the Main Street Gallery, the brainchild of Nancy Messinger of Kingston. Nancy decided back in 1969 that Wyoming Valley desperately needed gd art gallery. En- couraged by her husband, Arnold, and her three sons and a daughter, she combed the New York markets for paintings and unusual art objects, and in a matter of a short time built a substantial business. Located on the second block of South Main Street until the flood, she also had a shop in the Peacock Alley of the Sterling Hotel for a year. The flood swept away the dream of a lifetime and the work of years, but Nancy, un- daunted, reopened a new and more beautiful shop at Kingston Corners. There is in the Gallery, a studio manned by Pen Shu- maker, the Sugar Notch artist who for 20 years drew the Ar- chie comics, as well as provided beautiful paintings for mass markets, and also did ‘‘There Oughtta be a Law’. Pen teaches and restores paintings. Nancy also has the assistance of Ken Gordon of Scranton, and occasionally, on busy days, members of the family and friends appear to help out. The Gallery is a delight to visit, as it is filled with many ' unusual things--decorator items for the home, a framing shop, water colors, sculptures, items both modern and traditional, and Nancy’s unerring instinct for what’s good and what's tasteful. Page 11 Chief Ray Titus has termed the excavation hole for the foun- dation of a home at the corner of Sunset and Elizabeth in Dallas Borough ‘‘a public nuisance.” One child, who got himself caught in the mud at the site, would no doubt agree with the police chief. As Chief Titus reports it, the construction was started by Safeway Construction Com- pany, which dug the hole. Since the firm left, nothing else has gone on there for some time. During this period the hole has taken in a good deal of snow and rain, so that now it is full of mud and water. This makes it very inviting to some young boys, according to the chief; he is concerned that others may meet similar or worse fates at the site. ‘Urbanski will build on the site and should be up there plans to talk to them, at the site, about possibly fencing off the area until construction is far- ther along. A spokesman for Stan Urban- “we don’t have a finalized con- tract as yet” with the owner of the site. He believes that it was six to eight months ago that the excavation was completed by Safeway, and points out that until Urbanski does actually get the contract, they are not at all responsible for anything that might happen there. The repre- sentative commented, ‘‘The people who have had it dug up are presently responsible.’”’ The spokesman for Urbanski made it clear that if they do get the contract, they will do something about the situation immediate- ly. : Chief Titus reports that the owner has been very coopera- tive and concerned about the situation, and that ‘‘she’s gone to the neighbors to ask them to try to keep their children out’ until she can alleviate the dan- ger. Safeway Construction Company, which started the job, was the object of the first lawsuit brought about by the new Wilkes-Barre flood-relief agency. The suit was filed by the Bureau of Consumer Pro- tection and Luzerne County Dis- trict Attorney Patrick J. Toole Jr. Due to the suit, the company has agreed not to enter into additional contracts for the con- struction of new homes and not to contract for home improve- ments or repairs until substan- tial progress, as determined by the Bureau of Consumer Pro- tection is made on all outstand- ing work. ..Grow Healthy Vegetables— Many home gardeners have trouble raising certain vege- tables because of disease-in- fested soil. Extension plant pathologists at The Pennsyl- vania State University suggest that a rotation may help control short-lived organisms, but in many cases resistant varieties should be used. y Charles Vito Sr., president of Safeway says of the site in ques- tion, ‘‘We don’t have anything to do with it anymore.” He ex- plained that due to construction problems this winter and the new lawsuit, they are ‘not bothering with any new homes.” Regardless of who is respon- sible for the situation, Chief Titus feels that it is potentially dangerous and hopes that parents can keep their children away from the excavation until it is made less dangerous.
