a _. Page 18 Council Emphasizes Preservation Hidden beneath the land sur- face, in almost every part of the United States, are natural re- servoirs of good wholesome water. This underground water is referred to as ‘‘ground water.” More than 10 million Amer- ican homeowners and farm families depend on this vast supply of ground water for their entire domestic water require- ments. These homeowners and farmers use individual wells and water systems to obtain good fresh water for home use, livestock and irrigation. Ground water offers several major advantages, both for the individual homeowner who uses it and for the United States as a whole: it is available in vast quantities. Over 97 percent of our fresh water is underground. Less than three percent is sur- face water, found in lakes and streams. The Ground Water Council reports that there are adequate quantities of ground water in nearly all areas of the country. Ground water stores itself. There is no loss through evapor- ation as there is in reservoir storage, for example. Ground water is generally un- polluted and uncontaminated, since it is naturally filtered through layers of soil and stone. It is generally inexpensive. Ground water is normally available at the point of use, and there is little need for costly treatment facilities. A high level of cleanliness is a principal reason why ground water is an ideal water supply. However, although it is natur- ally clean and of excellent bac- terial quality in its natural state over large areas, ground water is: being contaminated where short-sighted methods of sewage and waste dispose” are being used. What, then, can we do to pro- tect our vital ground water supplies? Conservation, as we are learning, is the job of every citizen. Start with your home. If you have a well, make sure it is pro- perly cased and constructed so that it'will be ‘protected from near-surfact contamination from pesticides, insecticides, etc. Areliable local well drilling contractor can help you here. If you have a home sewage or septic system, make certain it works properly and is cleaned periodically. It should be located well away from the well, downhill from your water supply. If you live in a densely populated area, it makes sense to go to a central sewage collec- tion and treatment system to make certain that contamina- tion is not put directly back into the ground. ground water continued, diane If individuals or companies abandon wells, they should be properly capped to avoid direct leakage into the underground water supply. Central sewage plants should ‘treat sewage to a high degree, to protect surface as well .as ground water sup- plies. : Industries and communities should not be permitted to dis- pose of any type of waste with- out the most stringent type of controls. If an underground water source is ruined, there is no procedure for cleaning it up. Finally, water must be re- turned to the ground. While we the drop in water table levels makes wells more expensive. State and federal rules are needed to insure that the amount of water taken from the ground be fully treated and then returned.
