Page 6 More than 250 parents and friends attended the annual open house at Penn State's Wilkes-Barre Campus recently. The event is scheduled each “year in order that parents and close friends of the incoming | students may have an op- portunity to tour the campus facilities, visit displays set up by the various departments and so parents may have an op- portunity to confer with faculty members if they have questions or problems relating to their son’s or daughter’s curriculum. Mr. Bierly welcomed the _ visitors to the campus and in- troduced the members of both ‘the associate degree and baccalaureate programs faculty. ~ Stanley Charnick, member of ~ the 1971 graduating class who received his associate degree in electrical engineering, and recipient of the University’s 1971 Walker Award, spoke to those present on the ‘Trials and Tribulations of a Student.” ' Stan, who returned to the campus this year to pursue a baccalaureate degree in biology, stated that a student’s present path determines his life in the future. He mentioned that after seven years of electronics- four years in the military ‘service, two years in class, and Pennsylvania’s 16th ob- “servance of Farm-City Week, scheduled for Nov. 17-23, will emphasize concern for im- proving our quality of life and — ets Testing at P.S.U. Campus Lee Sweinberg, associate professor of engineering, has announced that the tests for the “Jets National Engineering Aptitude Search will be held at the Penn State University’s ~ Wilkes-Barre Campus, Jan. 19, 1973 at 1 p.m. in the engineering building. All area high school students in grades ninth through 12 are eligible to register for the tests “and should apply through their high school counselors no later than Nov. 22 giving them their name, age, address, grade, and school accompanied by a check for $3 made payable to the JETS. The aptitude tests are given annually by the Wilkes-Barre Campus for those students interested in the field of engineering. one year in industry-he has decided that he is not sure this is his field and thus, has come back for biology. He urged parents to sit back and let their son or daughter make their own decisions. ‘‘Encourage them but let them decide,” he said. Dr. Harold O’Brien, associate dean from University Park, spoke on ‘What Shall We Tell Young People Today.” He stressed the marvelous facilities available to the students at Hayfield House. He encouraged young people to get started on the road of life...to get a wedge in the door. “It is marvelous,” he said, “that young people in this area can get first two years of baccalaureate work or their two year associate degree at the local campus.” He pointed out that the Wilkes-Barre Campus is the only Commonwealth Campus that awards an associate degree in highway engineering or in broadcasting. “Our young people must seek education if they desire to future. The job held by them today that pays sufficient in- come to buy a car, travel, etc., is not sufficient for a lifetime career.” He urged parents and students both to recognize the recognizing the responsibilities which are shared by both farm and urban people. The 1972 celebration also will focus attention on the fact that improving the quality of the environment is everybody’s business, County Farm-City Week Chairman O. Gene Thrasher points out. Farm-City Week observances were organized on a national scale 18 years ago ‘‘to bring about better understanding between rural and urban segments of the society, thus make for a stronger America.” The need for this un- derstanding, Mr. Thrasher emphasizes, is greater today than at any time in the past. Pennsylvania is linking its observance this year to the theme, ‘Quality of Life— Mutual Responsibility of Farm and City.” County committees are organized throughout the state to plan programs in cities, town and rural areas. “Few people realize the truly close partnership that exists between our rural and urban communities,” Mr. Thrasher said, ‘or how greatly our economy depends on the mutual cooperation of rural and urban Pennsylvania.” i A immediately. | NAME STREET + TOWN, gs value of trained intelligence; to learn something about discipline and competition; to realize that self-development comes with self-discipline. He told the students present that they are fortunate to be born in a land that has abundance of everything; - that .they should stop to consider that their parents before them suffered through depressions, supported health research, worked to make it possible for today’s youth to enjoy the best foods, warm clothes; and good health. He challenged the students to pick up the ball and carry on-to continue to work toward the solution of problems such as pollution and needless wars. He closed by saying that he had great faith in the youth of today and their success in moving forward. Following Dr. O’Brien’s address, visitors toured the campus facilities, conferred with faculty members and later assembled in the main livingroom for refreshments. § i MOST ACMES ‘TIL 9 P.M. CLOSED THANKSSIVING FRI, SAT. Continuing season at a rapid pace, the Wilkes College Theatre will pre- sent Lillian Heéllman’'s The Little Foxes, Dec. 6, 7, 8 and 9. with curtain at 8 p.m. The Little Foxes is usually considered the major achieve- ment of Lillian Hellman, and many critics place it high on the list of American plays. Miss Hellman’s dialogue crackles and her characters convince; there is no extra- neous matter present, so that The Little Foxes is brilliantly compact and effective theatre. She has put together a vibrant play that works and bestows viable parts on all the members of the cast. It would be difficult to find a more malignant gang of petty robber barons than Miss Hell- man’s chief characters. Two brothers and a sister in a small Southern town are consumed with a passion to exploit the earth. Forming a partenership with a Chicago capitalist, they propose to build a cotton factory Packers Brand (20 To 24 Lbs.) (10 To 16 Lbs.) kb 43° in the South, where costs are cheap and profits high. The Chicago end of the deal is sound but Miss Hellman is telling a sordid story of how the brothers and the sister destroy each other with their avarice and cold hatred. They crush the opposition set up by a brother-in-law of higher principles; they rob him and hasten His death. But they also outwit each other in sharp deal- ings and bargain their mean souls away. Members of the cast include Birdie Hubbard, Lena Pickett; Oscar Hubbard, Bob Leach; Leo Hubbard, Pat Wilson; Regina Giddens, Paula Car- dias; William = Marshall, Richard Finkelstein; Benjamin Hubbard, Matt Hughes; Alex- andra Giddens, Kathy Fetch; Horace Giddens, Paul Garrity. Director Joseph Salsburg anticipates a successful show due to a cast of most capable actors. Scenery and lighting will be designed by Klaus Holm and Lancaster Brand (28 To 24 Lbs.) (10 To 16 Lbs.)
