mn a post game interview, North Carolina State Coach Lou Holtz indicated that his team was not ready in the first half of Saturday’s 37-22 defeat of the Wolfpack by the Penn. State Nittany Lions. However, Coach Holtz did not lay the blame for the poor preparation on his team as he said, “It was my fault that the team wasn’t ready.” In further questioning about his team’s poor first half per- formance, he maintained that ' the defeat was due to the - superior play of the Penn State offensive team. ‘We couldn’t reach the passer (Hufnagel) and Hufnagel read our one-on- one defense very well. We weren't reacting well on defense and Hufnagel is an excellent quarterback and he did a good job on our secon- dary.” Quite true, for in the first half Huffy completed six passes for 143 yards and one TD. In the ~ second half, when the Wolfpack was playing a more serious _ defense, the Lions played an even more serious offense, and with Hufnagel directing the team, completed four passes for a total passing yardage for the senior quarterback of 212 yards. One of those passes was a 33- yard throw to flanker Jimmy Scott that set up a Penn State first and goal on the NC State _ one-yard: line. Hufnagel then called his own number and ran over for his second TD of the afternoon. * Running bath John Cap- pelletti continued his im- provement with a fifth game of over 100 yards rushing, this ~ week rushing 22 times for 129 one for the Lions first touch- ‘down. Penn State Coach Joe Paterno called the contest a ‘‘great, great, great game played by the defense.” In fact, there was little braggadocio in this statement by Paterno. Of the three touch- ~ downs scored by the Wolfpack, two came on the second team defense. The first or ‘blue’ defensive unit broke down only once on a heautifully: executed 98-yard pass and run by the ~~ Wolfpack when quarterback Bruce Shaw unloaded a pass down the sideline that wide receiver Pat Kenney took in stride to outrace the Lion defenders to the goal line. ~ Defensive back Greg Ducette “had the only shot at Kenney but as Greg dove for the trip, Kenney strutted high and went the remaining 15 yards unim- peded. Coach Paterno praised the play of his defensive players, paying particular attention to defensive tackle Randy Crowder and linebacker John Skorupan. ‘Randy played a fine game,’”’”’ Joe said, ‘‘and ~ Skorupan played the usual great game he always does.” Wolfpack Coach Holtz in reply to a question added, ‘‘Crowder is extremely quick and Skorupan is a super linebacker.” The superlative ‘‘super’’ probably made its impression on Coach Holtz when Penn State stopped the Wolfpack on a fine goal line stand in the third quarter. N.C. State had a first and goal on the nine-yard line. After running the ball three _ times for a net gain of six yards, on the fourth down quarterback Shaw attempted a pass for the TD but it was deflected on a fine effort by linebacker John 10% On funds placed for 90- 180-270 days. Paterno said his game plan concentrated on stopping the Wolfpack running and passing attack over the middle. With the team from North Carolina averaging 433 yards per game going into the contest, the Lions limited the Wolfpack to first ground. in 18 attempts (0.722 yard average) and only 40 yards via the air, implementing the game strategy with marked success. In the final quarter with Penn State leading 32-16, Lion reserve quarterback Tom Shuman got into the game with 3:37 remaining. Shuman tried a run and when it lost ground, he attempted a series of passes. The first two fell incomplete and with a fourth down and 12 on the NC State 26-yard line, Shuman repeated his hookup of last week with Dave Bland by again tossing a TD pass (see photo) to make the score 37-16 Penn State. Shuman might be getting a complex, however. When he gets into a game, the Lions usually are leading by a com- fortable margin and Coach Paterno’s philosophy of not running up the score to please the pollsters interferes with Shuman’s chance to show his stuff. Hence, Shuman came into last week’s game against Maryland and threw three passes, one for a TD, and this week threw only four passes, again one for a TD. Each time he scores, Joe has ordered a halt to the passing game. Sounds like a Catch-22 operation—when Shuman throws successfully, Shuman is no longer permitted to throw! On balance, though, Coach Paterno’s rule might be studied by various big time football coaches who constantly run up the score to impress the pollsters but who in the process humiliate the opposing team players, coaches and fans. This week’s game will find the Nittany Lions traveling to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to battle the Boston College team. As with NC State, Penn State has never lost to BC in eight previous encounters. dating to 1949. The Lions will extend the streak to nine straight both for the season and in the series.
