Despite a last quarter surge relying mainly on the relief work of big sophomore Steve Meskers, Dallas didn’t have enough to go all the way against the Blue Knights of Seminary as the Mountaineers went down to a 66-64 defeat last Wednesday at the Back Mountain high school. Dallas started off slow and fell back 16-5 seconds before the end of the first period. They began a comeback midway through the second period as fast breaks by the Mountaineer guards brought them to within six at half 31-25. Dallas failed to continue the play that had brought them close at the end of the half, as Seminary built their lead to 10 going into the final period 47-37. With Steve Meskers in the game, the Mountaineers came alive and Dallas ran off eight unanswered points near the midpoint of the period. With less than one minute remaining, another basket by Meskers knotted the score at 64. With 19 seconds remaining, Earl Phillips hit two foul shots which proved to be the winning margin. The Mountaineers got two shots off at the basket, but failed to capitalize on either and The race grew tighter in the - George Shupp League as Harris Associates took 3 from Mahaffey Oil to move into a two-way tie for first with Wilkes-Barre Truck. Boston Texaco made it a clean sweep over Hurst Supplies and Fino’s did the same to Kunkle Motors. Jack Winters keglers dropped 3 points to Hoppy’s Cafe and Daring’s Market copped 3 points from Larksville 66. Valley Paperback men are in front of Payne Printery by one half game in the Back Mountain Neighborhood League by virtue of shutting out Disque’s while Konefals gave up 4 to Payne’s. It’s still anyone’s game as only 714 points separate first and last place. Brothers Four five blanked Henry's Jewelry and Roth Novelty picked up 3 from Dallas Finance. Rolling high scores were Kazokas 206 (588), Ruth 235 (584), Fox 218, Yenale- vitch 212, Boston 210, and R. Bonomo 202. Three of the four teams in the Bowlerette League are tied for first place with 11-9 each. Duke Isaacs, Tom Reese, and Boyd R. White hold top spot. Trucks- ville Pharmacy took 3 from Duke Isaacs while Tom Reese picked up 3 from Boyd R. White. L. Cyphers 183-191 (525) set the pace followed by T. Lang- don’s (473) and F. Dierolf’s (469). K. Kalafsky rolled 172. Dallas Sunoco took 3 points from Hasay Motors to move into a first place tie with Crown Major League. Dallas Shopping Center shut out Automatic Cigarette and Shavertown Lumber and Gebhardts battled to a 2-2 draw. Sorry-no report on Dallas Post and Wesley Gulf; somebody walked off with the records. F. Don re- ceived an award for his 700 rolled just a few weeks ago. Barb was also made a member of the WIBC’s 600 club, her name entered by the local city association. a rebound by Rob Seely sealed the game as time ran out. The size of Sem proved to be a big factor as Stettler and Ricket did most of the scoring for the Blue Knights. Stettler connect- ed on six goals and seven foul shots for 19, while his sop- homore teammate hit nine goals and two foul shots for a 20 point total. Novroski led the Mountain- eers with 20 while Steve Meskers totaled 17 points, 15 in the final half, for the Back Mountain club. Ed Riefenstahl accounted for another 12 in Dallas’ losing effort. A notable scoring mark was passed in the game as Moun- taineer junior Tim Fannick topped the 600 point plateau in two years of varisty action. This places him a good position to hit the thousand mark next year. The JV Mounts made it six in a row over Seminary JV teams with a 77-46 win. Chuck Wilson led the way with 28 and was fol- lowed by Steve Meskers, who had 17 points while playing only one half. Proto by Dave Kozemchak Dallas-Seminary game. With the five Dallas seniors all in the starting line-up for their final home game, Dallas bolted for 36 points in the second period to run away with 105-46 rout of the Comets of Crest- wood. Dallas had trouble early as they failed to hit a point for the first two minutes and trailed 10- 3 after four minutes of play. With a full court press in the second period the Mountaineers held Crestwood to 6 points while running off 36 of their own, most of them by senior forward Bob Wallace. Ahead 20-52 at half, Dallas fans got a look at next year’s team as only two seniors saw action in the last 16 minutes. Playing the entire last quarter and much of the third quarter with underclassmen, Dallas continued to run up the score and outscored Crestwood 53-26 in the closing half. Twelve Mountaineers man- aged to score in the mounts’ second 100 point game of the year. Four of five seniors hit double figures in their final game at Dallas. Bob Wallace led all scorers with 24. He was followed by Greg Novroski with 20 and Gary Kostrobala and Jon LaBerge with 10 each. The win put Dallas in second place behind Sem. for the second half, and in a tie for second with G.A.R. for the over- all league. Seminary is ineligi- ble for PIAA playoffs because of their prep school classification. Therefore both G.A.R. and Dallas will continue on in dis- trict playoff competition. The Altar and Rosary Society of Our Lady of Victory Church, Warden Place, Harveys Lake, has been presented a beautiful Granny hand crochet afghan by Anna Stenger. Ackmann is the newly- elected president of Pocono Downs in one of a number of high level changes: announced following a meeting of the board of directors of the Luzerne county harness track. = Mr. Ackmann, who is president of L-P Properties, Inc., which recently acquired the controlling shares of Pocono Downs stock from James E. Durkin Sr., Dallas, succeeds the latter, who resigned from the board and is no longer associated with the track. Mr. Ackmann, is one of four new directors seated. Other new directors, who are all officers of L-P Properties, are Frederick D. Humphrey, W.L. Vansant and J.T. Knox. At the same time, Edward R. Gilkey was named vice pre- sident, general manager and assistant secretary. Mr. Gilkey, who has a broad racing background dating back to 1947, was executive secretary and deputy commissioner of the Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission. for four, and.a half years and in 1971 served as executive vice president and general manager of The Meadows race track in Washington, Pa.
