102 Jr. High Students One hundred two students in the Dallas Junior High School qualified for Certificates of Educational Development as the result of their outstanding performances on the National Educational Development Tests (NEDT). There were 34 cer- tificate winners in the seventh grade, 42 in the eighth grade, and 26 in the ninth grade. These certificates are awarded to recognize scholastic excellence and to promote greater interest in scholastic endeavors. Students whose composite scores are in the top 10 percent of their grades nationally qualify for these awards. The test was administered to all eighth grade students as part of the regular testing program and to seventh and ninth grade students on a voluntary basis. The staff members of the junior high school expressed their gratification with the per- formance of the students on all three grade levels. The median or middle composite percentile score made by students throughout the country was 50. The local average composite percentile scores were 76 in Grade 7, 66 in Grade 8, and 77 in Grade 9. Our local averages were all well above the mational median in all in- stances. The NEDT is used to measure broad aspects of the general educational development of students. The battery consists of five tests: English usage, mathematics usage, social ‘studies reading, natural sciences reading, and word Usage. The NEDT program has four objectives: Story Hour Lady Needed at Library There are at least 50 Back Mountain youngsters who stand to be very disappointed come the end of March if the Back Mountain Memorial Library cannot find a new story lady. Story hours are conducted at the library each Wednesday morning and havs grown so in popularity that two sessions must now be held to ac- commodate all of the youngsters who wish to par- ticipate in them. The fun-filled hours of stories and games have been conducted most recently considerable energy and ability. Mrs. Joseph will be leaving the area at the end of March, however, and no replacement for her has yet been located, Sue Davern, librarian, suggests that anyone interested in becoming a story lady might contact her at the library and arrange for some on-the-job training under Mrs. Joseph's aegis. While there is no age restriction for the position, she observes that the story hours might offer valuable experience to a college student who is planning a career in education. Young Artists Plan Exhibit Two College Misericordia seniors, Rita Hasdovic of Wilkes-Barre, and Anne Marie Showers of Mechanicsburg, will present a free art exhibit in Kennedy Lounge at the college March 4 and 5. The two art education majors will exhibit works in various art media completed both in and out of class at the college. The exhibit will be open to the public from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 on both In most instances, art exhibited will be available for sale. The information derived from the NEDT when combined with other relevant information can be used to provide the student with a measure of his educational development thus far and to assist him in forming realistic educational = and voactional plans.
