cation Winter sports activities are being scheduled for Moon Lake Park and a number of county residents are taking advantage of park facisiies, according to Robert. C. ®®ff director of Parks and Recreation. The park is open seven days a week for ice skating and fishing. Hours of park operation are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The skating area is located in front of the boat marina building. A fireplace in the marina will be utilized to provide warmth for skaters and fishermen on Saturdays and Sundays only. Picnic tables have been placed around the Photo by J. "_ 3 : \ area for those who wish to bring refreshments. Mr. Neff said park main- tenance crews are clearing and will continue to clear a large area for skating. As in past years, the skating area and fishing areas are separated. Fishermen are warned not to cut holes in the skating area ice. Director Neff reported that one fisherman caught a 7-1b. bass. “The fish was so large that additional ice had to be cut away’’ was the report. Bass and sunfish seem to be caught in good abundance by the anglers. Another big sporting event scheduled for this weekend at the park is sled dog races, according to an announcement by Luzerne County Tourist Promotion Agency. Originally set for Sweet Valley Sportland, Tourist Agency Director Paul Lauer cited the uncertainty of adequate snow coverage on trails at the Sweet Valley site as the reason for the shift in race location. He said the Moon Lake terrain provides more visibility for drivers and teams and minimizes the danger to par- ticipants in hidden obstacles under a light snow cover. There is an added advantage for spectators at Moon Lake, Mr. Lauer added, in that the cleared areas of the park will provide a better view of the larger sled dog teams ins the longer distance events. Racing will begin on both days at 11 a.m. and will include six classes of races, with par- ticipants from five sled dog clubs which comprise the Middle Atlantic Sled Dog Association. Host club is the Pennsylvania Sled Dog Club and race sponsor is Stegmaier Brewing Company. Moon Lake, Luzerne County’s new county park, is located just off Route 29 at Silkworth, Plymouth Township, and in- cludes over 600 acres of fields and forests. To Retire After 19 years of service as roadmaster of Dallas Township, - Fred Lamoreaux will retire Feb. 29. Mr. Lamoreaux also served as chairmman of the board of supervisors for 19 years, with a total of 23 years on the supervisory board. Present board chairman Philip Walter said that Mr. Lamoreaux’s replacement has not been named. Supervisors signed into law the new $5 per capita annual tax, which was the only in- crease in township taxes for 1972. The per capita tax was $3. An‘ordinance was passed, ef- fective Feb. 1, concerning dis- orderly conduct in the township. Maximum fine is not to exceed $300 or 30 days in jail. Secretary Glenn Howell was instructed to advertise for 40 tons of calcium chloride and 1,000 tons of 2-A modified road material. Photo by J! Kozemchak Sr. Certain ice fishermen who have been cutting holes in areas on Harveys Lake which are cleared of snow for ice skating were blasted by Harveys Lake Borough Councilman Carl Swanson last Thursday night at council’s regular monthly meeting. “These men are supposed to be sportsmen,” Swanson com- plained, ‘but I see nothing sportsmanlike about ruining skating areas which children have worked so hard to clear.” He suggested asking various sports clubs for cooperation in eliminating this practice. Council solicitor Joseph V. Kasper agreed that little could be done legally to prohibit persons from cutting holes in the skating areas, but he sug- gested that signs could be posted around the skating areas practice. In a meeting which ran as smoothly as clock-work, the councilmen agreed to re-ap- point Calvin McHose as collec- tor of the borough's amuse- ment, mechanical, per capita and light taxes. A resolution in- troduced by councilman Fred Merrill and approved by council authorized the Don Wilkinson Agency to collect the borough's earned income tax at a collec- tion rate of 31> percent. 824-9964 675-5281 864-3811 477-5210 822-5495 ’ James Faerber was named a probationary patrolman at a starting salary of $5,460. His probationary period will con- tinue through January, 1973. Council voted to accept a deed of dedication for Benbar Drive, a road formerly owned by Ben Rood of Laketon on which eight families reside. Mr. Rood, a life-long resident of Harveys Lake, has also indicated he will donate to the borough a lot off of Orchard Street, a gesture which Councilman Swanson termed ‘very gracious.” Secretary John Stenger was authorized to direct a letter to the Luzerne County Commun- ications Network informing it of the borough’s intention of pur- chasing several pieces of police equipment to use as a member of the county-wide police system. Mayor William Connolly, a long-time advocate of borough membership in the network, commended council for its action but recommended that it consider. purchasing three rather than two portable radio units. ‘Three units would great- ly expand our capabilitities as a police department,” the mayor maintained, ‘‘and the cost of an additional unit—given the 75 percent grant—we would re- ceive—would be no more than $200 to $300.” Council President Thomas Cadwalader explained that he had been informed that Har- veys Lake could purchase a third portable unit at a later time and at the same reduced price; the motion passed five to two, with Councilmen Donald Hanson and William Hoblak casting the negative votes.
