Tilghman Jailed For Forged Checks Charles R. Tilghman Jr. of Box 13, RD 1, Harveys Lake, pleaded guilty to two charges of forgery and waived hearing Tuesday = before District Magistrate Leonard D. Harvey. A.N.I. will enable one and two- party customers in the Dallas South exchange to make direct distance dialed calls and not have to give their number to the operator—their number is recorded automatically. Those customers with four and multi- party lines must still pass their number to the operator. Exchanges in the immediate Dallas area include Dallas South, Harding, Harveys Lake, Noxen, Sweet Valley and Center Moreland. 145,000 Telephones The number of telephones in service climbed to more than 145,000 during 1971, a record gain of 13,667. This figure in- cludes telephones acquired through the acquisition of the Leesport Telephone Company. Long distance messages during the year increased to 13,638,000, for a gain of nearly one million over the previous year. Construction of one new buil- ding was completed in 1971. In addition, a 4,500 square foot building was leased to house the new Dallas Service Center, which serves over 33,000 cus- tomers. Extension of local service calling areas brought increased benefits and savings to over 7,000 customers by the elimina- tion of message charges on an estimated volume of 228,000 calls during 1971. In addition, service improvements through such programs as base rate area extensions and establish- ment of zone rates, benefited approximately 1,200 customers by the elimination or reduction of mileage charges in outlying areas. These expansions will enable an additional 1,400 rural multi-party customers to ac- quire better grades of service at reduced costs. Commonwealth ~~ Telephone Company had a total plant in- vestment of $73,242,706 as of De- cember 31, 1971, and is the ninth largest Independent telephone system .in the nation, one of 1,800 Independent (non-Bell) companies that operate over 20.7 million telephones in more than half the nation’s geographic service area. Mr. Hibbard predicted out- standing growth for Common- wealth Telephone Company in the years ahead and said. the prime responsibility of the Company will be to provide high quality service, while building for the future. iJ He noted that raising addi- tional capital to provide for in- creased customer demand is a basic problem of the 1970's. Commonwealth, like telephone companies throughout the na- tion, finds that better earnings are necessary in order to con- tinue to attract the required captial. . 10, 1972 Petitions on eight juveniles have been filed with Luzerne County Juvenile Center by Dallas Township Patrolman James Gruver. The charge is “unlawful entry.” Rape Charge Herbert Lee Jr.,.a resident of RD 4, Dallas, has been charged with statutory rape on a com- plaint filed by James Evans of RD 1, Harveys Lake. Lee, who was arraigned Sunday before District Magistrate Leonard D. Harvey, is being held at the Luzerne County Prison in default of $22,000 bail. A hearing will be held tonight before Magistrate Harvey at 8 p.m. Eight juveniles and one minor were found Jan. 29 in an unoccupied house in Elmerest. Three cases of beer were confiscated during the same raid, but Patrolman Gruver reported none of the young people has admitted possession of the alcoholic beverages. In his investigation the Dallas Township officer has had the parents of the eight juveniles appear at the township police station, along with their children, for questioning.
