a PAGE FOUR Through Art Art in the Dallas Senior High School is a major elective subject. The interest of young people in art is substantiated by the over subscription of the art courses. The courses are planned around self ex- pression and are limited in content only to the extent of each student’s interest and his relationship to the world about him. A variety of materials and techniques are introduced and the art student progresses according to his own ability and pace. Some art majors preparing for college art must compile portfolios, others develop skills and techniques for present en- joyment and future life enrichment. The emphasis of the program is to give each student the opportunity to express himself creatively. Drawing, paint, lettering, designing, graphic printing, etching, sculpturing, and ceramics are just some of the many units covered during a school year. The students in the photographs are shown doing linoleum printmaking and sculpturing. Others are shown drawing and painting, still others are working on a special ecology project and a school-in- service project. The opportunities are many in the art class, and the art room has been likened to a one-room creative school with the teacher to explore various media processes. The student’s urge to express his thoughts and feelings is enhanced by his growing knowledge of art concepts and skills. sk The primary objective of the Dallas Jr. High School Graphic Arts Program is to provide a meaningful experience for all, of boys in the seventh, eighth and ninth grades, in the field of Graphic Arts. The program is scheduled in weekly 82 minute periods for 18 weeks. The seventh grade students are in- Most students, especially new ones, who enter the art room feel they have entered the industrial arts room. Even the architect who planned the art room was amazed at the many different tools the art room contained. Traditionally, art class consisted of drawing and painting; but, in the Dallas Junior High Art Department, you may find someone sewing or sawing. Students enjoy a complete ceramic center, including kiln. Lessons are given to individuals on the potter’s wheel. Plaster gauze, used ordinarily by the doctor to set broken bones, is used to create modern sculptural forms. The art rooms of our schools are ex- cellent examples of ecology at work. Very little is thrown away. Discarded objects, such as newspaper, wire, bottles, card- board boxes, etc. are constantly being put to use as some part of art expression. Of course, drawing and painting are not neglected. You will find examples of Watercolor, Tempera, Ink, Pastels, Colored Pencils, and Crayon work. The latest painting medium, Acrylics, is also found. Because of its quick drying quality, it lends itself to the hectic schedule of public school art classes. The halls of the school leading to the art room are filled with student's work. Two regular art teachers and a student art teacher are there to help the students with the technical problems of using the various materials available. The door of the art room is always open. During this time, they are taught how to use and care for mechanical drawing tools along with studying and drawing simple or- thographic projections. They also become acquainted with the various types of lines used in mechanical drawing and how to apply this knowledge to shop drawings which will be used in their industrial arts classes. Our eighth grade program centers around silk screen process printing which is the third largest printing industry. Students prepare, cut and print paper stencil designs which are later applied to silk screen printing. Hand cut lacquer film designs are then produced, adhered to a screen and then the design is printed on Early Dismissal— In the event the weather during the day should become so bad that it neces- sitates dismissing the students earlier than usual, elementary and kindergarten pupils will be dismissed first and secon- dary students will be released as soon as the buses are available after making the elementary runs. Parents are asked to make whatever special arrangements are necessary for children arriving at home earlier than usual. When an early dismissal is called, arrangements will be made to care for children who are usually picked up by their parents until such time as the parents arrive. won letter-press operation. paper, art designs, commercial ads, greeting cards and textile prints. When the screen process is completed, the boys are introduced to Letterpress printing which is the composing of printed matter by setting individual pieces of type and then printing this material on hand lever pilot presses. Letterpress printing is continued in the ninth grade classes along with Offset printing. Each ninth grade group is divided with half of each group working in a different area. Offset printing is the composing of printed matter with the aid of sophisticated machines and presses. A wide variety of projects are produced in both areas of printing including stationery, memo pads, ‘programs, business cards, and a variety of other printed matter. Aside from the areas of printing that have been mentioned our students also have the opportunity to do engraving of name plates, produce rubber stamps and work in the area of photography. A Graphic Arts Club is scheduled where highly motivated students can go beyond the classroom projects and produce professional quality work. Our Graphic Arts Club has printed our first Dallas Junior High Newspaper which was distributed to all of our students in the Junior High. Without a doubt we have one of the finest equipped Graphic Arts Departments for Jr. High students in Pennsylvania: lini. i
