March lion roars
Into Back Mountain
Somehow the daily activities
of Back Mountain residents
continued, though slowly, last
Wednesday and Thursday des-
pite a heavy snowfall. Approx-
imately 9 to 12 inches fell. The
period was marked also by
heavy gusts of wind up to 60
miles an hour. Blowing snow
made it difficult to see in many
road areas, and drifts were
heavy and deep.
The storm finally tapered to
snow flurries by Thursday
afternoon, with a daytime high
near 30 degrees.
Early Wednesday morning
school in Dallas District was not
cancelled, but many buses were
delayed and students were late.
Some teachers were unable to
get to school because of road
conditions. School officials
finally decided to dismiss all
classes about mid-morning. No
attempts were made to have
school Thursday or Friday due
to liazardous driving conditions.

Wednesday mornin
Lerch was high for the laundry

motorists on Route 309 were °
caught in a monumental traffic
jam, caused in part by a
tractor-trailer stalled on the
highway between Carverton
Road and Harris Hill.
Icy roads were also contrib-
uting factors in the traffic tie-
up, which lasted until 9:30 or so,
causing many employes to
report late for work.
By the time workers were
supposed to go to work Thurs-
day morning, they found it an
impossibility to get driveways
dug out or plowed of the heavy
fall. Residents with shorter
drives and snow-blowers car-
ried their less fortunate neigh-
bors to work in many instances.
Sleds and skis were also seen as
means of transportation. Those
who were near enough walked
to work.
Municipal and state crews
worked around the clock—plow-
ing, salting, etc.
According to the National
Weather Service, the storm sys-
tem was centered along the Gulf
states from Texas to South
THE DALLAS POST, MARCH 11, 1971
Carolina. ' Portions began
moving northward, carrying
rain as far as Reading, Pa., and
snow from that point on. The
storm continued up along the
east coast after it left the north-
eastern Pennsylvania area, and
dumped deep snow in the New
England States before moving
out to sea.
The weather continues to be
inclement—as snow squalls,
gusty winds or flurries mar a
part of each day. March came
in like a lion and seems deter-
mined, if present weather
patterns are followed, to go out
like a lion.
