Whitesell to train
men under JOBS
Seven disadvantaged jobless
workers will train at Whitesell
Brothers General Contractors,
Inc., Dallas, under the JOBS
program, the U.S. Department
of Labor announced last week.
The trainees will be phased
into Whitesell Brothers during
the first three months of its 18-
month contract with the Labor
Department. Elwood Whitesell
is in charge of the JOBS pro-
gram for the firm.
Regional Manpower Adminis-
trator William R. Curtis said
the department had approved a
$8386 contract with the firm to
provide the new hires with 18
months of intensive training to
learn the skills of a construction
worker. The trainees will go on
the payroll earning $2 an hour
and following completion of
their training they will be per-
manent workers earning hourly
rates of $2.25.
The JOBS (Job Opportunities
in the Business Sector) pro-
gram is a joint effort of the
Labor Department and the Na- . f
tional Alliance of Businessmen
to hire and train the jobless for
permanent employment. The
Federal funds will be used to
help offset the extra costs of the
firm in on-the-job training and
intensive supportive services
such as remedial and basic
education, minor medical care
and job coaching.
LAKE-LEHMAN
HIGH SCHOOL
Band activities
Lake-Lehman’s prize winning
band participated in Ashley’s
centenial celebration, May 18,
and marched and performed in
the Sweet Valley Memorial Day
Parade May 30. Under the
supervision of John Miliauskas,
the director of the band, the
members will travel to Sher-
burne, N.Y., to participate in
the annual competition June 6.
The divisions they will compete
in are field show, concert,
parade, and baton twirling.
Last year, LLHS received first
place honors in parade and

cert, and fifth in field show. We
can only hope that they do as
well this year.

of 20 teams. Don established a
