And that’s as it should be. For, by their performances, they've earned their place in the sport spotlight. But after spending some four decades on the sports beat, I have discovered that the success of the name stars often hinges on the overall team effort. And to carry the analysis a little farther, cham- pionships are won during the practice sessions. Who are the ‘stars’ of these behind-the-scenes training sessions? The forgotten men of sports—that’s who—the scrubs. These are the players who rarely if ever break into the lineup during a game. They never get their names in print or on the air. They're simply a part of the squad. But also a vital part of the program that leads to titles. No one brought this point /more clearly to focus than John Scott. He was a member of last season’s championship University of Scranton basketball team. He saw action in every game played by Nat Volpe’s Royals. Yes, he even played the hero’s role on several occasions. But John Scott, a senior, speaking at a recent testimonial dinner honoring the Royals, paid his tribute to the scrubs. He did it so magnificently, the president of the University Father Aloysious Galvin, © S.J., who followed Scott on the §peaking program, couldn’t help but point out that Scott had scored his greatest victory. What did Scott say that was so important? Simply this: “Without the scrubs we would never have won the Northern Division championship in the Middle Atlantic Conference. “It’s wonderful,” the likeable youngster continued, “to shower praises on the varsity quintet, to single out its individual heroes. They did the job on the court. “But they learned their lessons in practice. And the men who taught them were never given any credit. What if only the five starters showed up for practice? What do you think they’d accomplish?’ Scott answered his own question. ‘Nothing at all. The scrubs test the varsity, run the opposing team’s plays, wear themselves out making sure the five men who will play most of the game are ready. “But no one ever gives them any credit, except perhaps the coach. “So I'd like to salute the subs or scrubs for their contribution to the success we enjoyed. For in effect they played just as important a part in winning the title as the men who gained the headlines.’ And John Scott was so right. He had pointed up the real reason for the success of any team. He had - given praise to the scrubs. If you've ever been one, you can now revel the glory of being a key member A ? of the team. John Scott said you were. 4 Here is a student, a senior at the University of Scranton, calling attention to the formula for success that is the hallmark of any great team. Isn’t it amazing that I, like the rest of the nation’s sportswriters and broadcasters, had completely overlooked the scrubs? And I should have known better. I was a scrub on many a team. So, to all scrubs everywhere, a 21-gun salute for your contributions to the wonderful world of sport. John Scott served as the inspiration for this column. I know he’s inspired every member of every team to go all out in search of a championship that comes not through the efforts of the headline-makers alone, but through the cooperation of every member of the squad right down to the lowliest scrub. “Rub a dub dub—three cheers for the scrub The hub on the axle of championship teams.” MATCH THE MOWER" WITH THE POWER.
