PAGE EIGHT MOUNT ZION Last Saturday Catherine and I went down to First United Methodist Church in Wilkes- Barre to attend a session of the National Fellowship of Methodist Musicians (NAF- OMM). It was a workshop featuring new hymns, and other features of our new Methodist Hymnal. Prof. Al Haas of Wyo- ming Seminary was the work- shop leader. It was an all day affair, very enjoyable and profitable. When we got home there were a number of things to be done, among. the most impor- tant was for Catherine to take Tuffy for his afternoon walk. While they were gone I noticed a car in the yard and went out and‘there met two people whom I had known about but never met, "Mrs. F. D. Finney of Lan- caster who was visiting her mother, Mrs. Palmer in Trucks- ville, Mrs.. Finney’s husband Fred was formerly a Trucks- ville boy. Mrs. Finney had heard Dottie speak down in Lancaster during her furlough of 1967 and wanted to meet her folks here. Both she and her mother know many of the same Trucksville people we have known through the years. Mrs. Palmer ‘‘reads your column in the Dallas Post’ and of course knows us and our dog and our Glass House etc. We had a wonderful time visiting and when they were about to leave we were visiting in our drive- way and looking out across the pond talking about the ducks that sometimes come for a splash-down visit. Right be- fore our astonished eyes there flew a huge bird out from the evergreens along the South Corridor and landed at the back end of the pond. It was unmistakably the Great Blue Heron! We hadn’t seen one in a long time. Reminded me of the article I had just read in LIFE maga- zine of Feb. 28 on Astronauts and Herons! Last Friday when IT went to Valley Crest for my visits I was told when I got there that the Shrine Circus had, sent a delegation of entertainers to the auditorium and practically all the patients were there wait- ing for the show to begin. I have been familiar with that situation other years and knew there would be some to visit even so. So along the corridors I went and I heard one nurse call me ‘the Lone Ranger” for she told me they were all down to the circus. But I did . make a few calls and made some satisfactory visits. Never thought the chaplain could take the place of a delegation from a circus did you? But one patient needed special prayer, another needed a quiet visit, another needed some maga- gines I had—and a visit. Well, after awhile I myself went to ° the circus, found a seat and waited for it to begin. There was a splendid dog act. (My dog put on an act all his own before I left home. I took him for his morning mile before seven o’clock. Then had break- fast and got ready to go to Valley Crest. But there stood bright-eyes-bushy tail Tuffy asking for his morning walk. Vainly I said, ‘Tuffy, you had it already.” But he wouldn’t listen to me. But Cathy put on her severe tone and told him he knew he had already been on his walk and to simmer down, he wasn’t going again.” So when it was Cathy laying down. the law Tuffy resigned his special act.) Sunday morning found me feeling well and strong and thankful for a good night of quiet sleeping. Didn’t need to take any of the medicine on my bedside table, nor drink the thermos of hot milk I had pre- pared. Just slept like a reason- able man should! Don Schalk’s sermon was on the manifold spiritual blessings which only St. Paul himself could outline for us. And three boys constituted the choir for the day. Quite remarkable that even they should be on hand. ; For Dickie Holmes had just come through a seige of high fever and cold. And Jeffey Emanuel had earlier phoned Cathy that he had gone fishing yesterday and caught no fish but did catch a sore throat and so wouldn’t be there, But when the time came Jeffey was there with Dickie and Kevin and the three of them sang an anthem. And by the way, speaking of anthems, the authority on the new Methodist hymnal whom we have heard lecture a num ber of times and heard again last Saturday, Prof. Al Haas, named a large number of hymns in the hymnal eminently suitable to be used as anthems. With rehearsal such as any anthem should receive there are some splendid numbers in the hymnal such as the one the boys used Sunday morning as ' Church will meet this afternoon THE DALLAS POST, APRIL 24, 1969 MT. Every resting place in the woods in one is cleaning-up and burning. The grass is nice and green. I love spring. Everything smells so: clean, the grass when it’s cut and after a spring rain. . Mr. and Mrs. Grant Alt had a new roof on their well kept home. Every one has a happy air about them as if the door was left open and they just walked out. Kids are making more wash for their mothers. It's too hot to wear after school what they wore in school all in all its a beautiful time of the year. My neighbors are planting and turning over the soil. It’s a good thing we have spring because it seems every- body has added energy. Of course there's a nasty side too. Flies, mosquitos, bees and what have you, but so what we have twice as much good as we do bad.
