Back Mountain Boys
On Midshipman Cruise
Two local boys, Marine Lance
Corporal Harold J. Donnelly, son of
Harold Donnelly, Route 4, Dallas,
and Seaman William J. Jones, Jr., |
USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. William
J. Jones, Sr. of Beech Street, Shav-
ertown, are taking part in this
year’s midshipman cruise. as crew-
men of the nuclear powered guided
missile cruiser USS Long Beach.
Embarked in Long Beach are
some 160 midshipmen from 52 col- -
leges and wniversities from across
the nation. They will receive train-
ing in seamanship, gunnery, en-
gineering, and navigation.
The cruise is the major operation-
al Mgrining phase of undergraduate
nav¥ education. It provides “at sea”
exper ence to round out professional
studiss, and introduces the midship.

majer characteristic is Mlearning by

and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Traver
spent the weekend with Mr. and
Mrs. Arthur Johnson, Newark, Del.
Mrs. Kenneth Williams and chil-
dreg Susquehanna, spent the past
wéewe visiting her mom, Mrs. Ruth
Anstett, Pikes Creek, and many
other friends in the Back Mountain.
She has helped complete the plans
for the tenth reunion of their class,
which will be held at Konefals, Ed-
warg@hville, July 23rd. ;
Lincoln Play Opens
At Greenfield Village
“Our American Cousin,” the third
play in the repertory collection of
the American Drama Festival at
Greenfield Villlage, opens its sum-
mer run on Monday evening. Cur-
tain time for this century-old clas-
sic is 8:30 p. m.
A favorite of Abraham Lincoln, it
was while watching a performance
of this eccentric comedy that he
was assassinated by John Wilkes
Booth. The play, by Tom Taylor,
was first - perfirmed in New York
in 1858.
Two other early American plays
alternate with “Our American Cous-
in,” Percy MacKaye's fantasy, “The
Scarecrow,”
colorful and exciting “Shenandoah”.

Two Local Kingsmen
Make Dean's List
Dr. Richard Loomis, dean: of
King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, an-
nounced that two area young men
had attained the Dean’s List during
the recently concluded semester.
Cited were Joseph Vandura of
Chase Road, Shavertown, a junior
government major, who was Magna
Cum Laude; and John Williams, 60
Norton = Avenue, Dallas, a senior
government major.
The local Kingsmen were among
126 students named to the Dean's
List this semester.
Scout Directors To Meet
Monthly Board of Directors’ Meet-
ing of Penn's Woods Girl Scout
Council will be held on Tuesday,
July 19, at Camp Joy Lo in Hobbie,
one of five Camps maintained by
the Penn's Woods Council. Sched-
uled starting time is set at 10 a.m.
Mrs. Harry Crawford, Dallas, is an
officer of the Penn’s Woods Council.
