CHARLES GILBERT | Last Wednesday night the people Orange Methodist Church ostensibly featured a not unusual | type of Family Night Supper at the | Fellowship Hall. A crowd of nearly | one hundred sat down to supper | which was of the covered dish vari- | ety, bountiful and good. Mrs. Doro- thy Hess introduced Pastor William Reid who in turn presented Charles | H. Gilbert, pastor of the church from 1936 to 1946. Mr. Gilbert made | the surprise announcement that the | supper was. in reality a testimonial | to the church organist Mrs. Samuel | Gardner. Mrs. Gardner, known and | | by complete surprise, having no | inkling of what was going on other | than a Family Night supper. | Mr. Gilbert spoke as a former | pastor in appreciation of the years | of undeviating faithfulness of Roberta Gardner as volunteer or- ganist for thirty six years. She first | began to play piano for church at | the age of thirteen. Previously the late Mrs. Arch Baird had been | pianist and before that Mrs. Ben | Eaton, Roberta's mother had played. | During Mr. Gilbert's pastorate he | officiated at the marriage of Roberta Eaton to Samuel Gardner. They never remembering a Sunday when Mrs. Gardner was not in her place on the piano bench with the excep- tion of the one Sunday when she took time off to give birth to her child! Pastor Reid also spoke com- patience, with an unruffled disposi- tion. Her never-failing serenity has had a much-needed influence on the whole community. Dies In Her Sleep Mrs. Rachel Blossom, 84, native and life-long resident of Buckwheat Hollow, died in her sleep early last Wednesday morning. .
