Elston, Executor. All persons indebted to said estate’ are required to make payment, those having claims or demands to present same without delay to George L. Fenner, Sr., Attorney, 615 Miners August 2, 1964 It really seems impossible that I have been here a week and several days because it really seems much longer. I only wish I had enough free time to write to everyone. School is quite different than 1. expected. Subjects and teachers are similar but the grading is dif- ferent. Mathematics is so entirely different because it is all jumbled together. There is so much that IT haven’t had. Tomorrow I am going to one of the townships where the natives live and visit one of their schools. I will tell you about it later. There is a tremendous Indian population here in Durban so one day we are going to visit one of their markets and watch them dance. I am scheduled for a debate at school on the affirmative side of the question, “Pupils Who Attend Boarding Schools Make Better Citi- zens.” Of course I totally disagree with my side and can’t think of much of an argument. If I prove one of the best speakers, I will be in a debate sponsored by the Durban Chamber of Commerce. At the end of September I am going to a Science Fair at one of the nearby colleges. I may us well take advantage of anything like this that pops up. I am hoping to make the Athletic Team. at school but am so out of shape that Ill really have to work hard. I am the only Rotary Exchange Student in S. Africa but there are over 29 A. F. S. students in the Re- public. Bill Mathers, from Ohio, is in our school and sits right behind me. I think he appreciates someone else being here because now I can help defend the United States. The weather has been marvelous but today it drizzled. Please send me some pictures of the inside of our home and school, also recipes for Apple and Cherry Pie, Chocolate Cake, Richmond Frosting, Cinna- mon Buns, Cream Puffs and any other goodies. (It makes my mouth water just to think of them.) Tuesday night it was Pop Freed’s birthday so we went to the “67” Restaurant in Durban and had Filet en boite. Boy, was it great. The place was exquisite, resembled Perugino’s. ; August 9 Last Sunday 1 gave my talk at States and listening to them, I could not fully agree with many of i their conclusions. At the end of September there is to be a talent show at school and it should be fun. I'm playing the tenor sax in a band with three other guys and then I'm to be the commentator for a comedy-manne- quin show, for the 12 greatest nuts at school. How I get hooked, I'll never know. ; When I ‘got to Port Elizabeth I was met by Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, who gave me a lovely tour all a- round the city and I stayed over- night at their home. They invited a chap for dinner and arranged for two others to come because their children were at boarding school, one in London and one in the Army. The next day the Andersons took me to the bus and T just made it. We had tea at a place where a bridge had been built over a deep gorge by an Ital- ian. They started building from both sides and when they finally met their calculations were so ac- curate that théy were only one eighth of an inch off. Pretty fair, I'd say. We all stopped at the Tzitz- ikama forest which is a huge mass of yellow woods and stinkwoods, which take a hundred years to ma- ture and from which expensive fur- niture is made. id On Sunday we took a picnic lunch to the beach and it was ex- actly as I had pictured a South Sea island. The sea was so clean, wash- ing up on the snow white beaches which seemed to go on indefinitely and unlike Durban we had no worry of sharks due to the cold water temperatures. The nicest part of all was that it is so untouched and completely uncommercialized. I met a young Rotary group from 18 to 25 and it is amazing the work they do and the seriousness with which they do it. I also visited the Art Gallery, Botonical Gardens, met Lionel Wilson, Springbok Rugby Player, visited the Kirstenbosch Gardens, a Red (Cross. Children’s Hospital, entertained three girls go- ing to the U. S. in August under AF.S., attended a Sports Meeting and was forever kept busy. We visited one of the Old Town Meeting Halls and for some reason I glanced through the visitors book and whose name should I see but the Jewish Club. You can’t imagine Linda Taylor's, who had been there what a fix I got into. The talk went four days before I had. So I took over well enough but then these!down the name after hers and de- two men started firing questions at’ cided to chance phoning this person. me concerning the differences be-|I finally found the right Robinson tween the Democratic and Repub-' ind here Linda had been staying i me questions” concerning our !gov- , ernment and then began telling me lican parties. I answered as well as I could but of course I didn't know that much about it. But this wasn't the worst of it. This one man came up to me and pulled me over to the side. He kept asking facts he had gotten out of a com- puter. Julie tried to get me away but he was so persistent. Finally we man- aged. This man was a spreader of propaganda for the Nationalist Par- ty and whether he thought T was naive and would give him informa- tion, I don’t know. Pop Freed and I talked it over for an hour and a half after I reached home. I certain- ly hope I don’t run into a situation like that again. Something may have developed out of it. Also at the club were two girls who had just returned from the United four streets down from me for a week but had left two days earlier. I was sorry to have missed her. Before I close I must tell you that I visited a Diamond Mine today (no free samples). Will tell you about it in my next letter. Until then, love to all. TIl be 19 by the next time I write and am going to a St. Patrick’s Ball tonight. Tomorrow (my birthday) I speak to the Rotary Club again along with two ambassa- dors. Please give this letter to Mrs. Anderson as soon as possible. Tell her as soon as I get to Kruger National Park, I'll write her a 25 page letter.
