In Tribute To Their Fallen Chief
Marnes Stand Silent On Okinawa
By a Mt. Zion Boy, E. W. LaBar, per C. H. Gilbert
© “It was a cool November day and
the wind blew with its fall chill
from the North. The American Flag
flew silently at half staff as a calm
and almost complete silence fell
upon the field. This is how it took
place at Headquarters Battalion, 3d
Marine Division (Rein), FMF Camp
Hauge, Okinawa.
At 11:00 A. M. on November 25,
1963 the men of our unit, five full
companies with only the watch
standers left behind stood at at-
tention as the alert was sounded.
The command, “ at ease’, was giv-
en and one at a time the Division,
Catholic and Protestant Chaplains
offered a prayer for our fallen Com-
mander in Chief, John F. Kennedy.
As the prayers were offered, all to
be heard were a few muffled coughs.
the solemn and mournful funeral
march began to play, men who had
seen combat and geen comrade’s
fall dead at their cides, began to
cry unashamed. This was a time
hearts of all men from the youngest
to the oldest man on the field. We
came here to pay tribute and re-
spect to our leader and dedicate
a new pledge ‘to defend with our
very lives the freedom he so gal-
lanly fought for.. Our leader is gone,
challenge and we stand ready at
his command.
“At 11:20 A. M,, as if a sign of
finality, the sad but beautiful notes
of taps sounded and echoed in the
wind, the glorious strains of “Am-
erica the Beautiful” broke the still-
ness of the air. At a funeral cadence,
the men of the Battalion marched
in silence and grief from the field
at seventy steps per minute, ‘that
of the funeral march. For the first
time we knew what we could not
believe was true, a man for whom
we held an undying respect and
deep love was gone, John F. Ken-
nedy was dead.” :
In our Gene's letter he said, “The |
folks back home can better under-
stand how we felt by this.”

Just imagine how a modern mercury vapor light would bathe your
house and lawn with light! The Dusk-to-Dawner would serve as
your own private street lamp, making the driveway and walks
easier to find and safer to use in good weather as well as on dark,
- rainy nights. It would banish creepy shadews and you'd feel a lot
safer when coming home late—especially if there are many
shadowy areas between the garage and the house.
® Tha Dusk-to-Dawner automatically contes on at dusk, turns off
at dawn. It’s your all-night watchman, discourages prowlers,
standing guard while you sleep or while you're away. And the
light will beautify your home and landscaping after dark. It
lets you garden after the sun goes down, and the whole family
can enjoy more evening hours of outdoor living. It’s also ideal
to licht up areas that you and your neighbor share—protects
summer cottages, too.
@ Luzerne Electric Division will furnish the light with built-in
photoelectric cell, install it and maintain it—even to replacing
bulbs. You can have one of these standard size general purpose,
7000 lumen mercury vapor lights for only $4.00 a month,
® The electricity used by the light doesn’t go through your elec-
tric meter—it’s included in the monthly charge. Many Luzerne
Electric Division’s customers already enjoy this fine lighting :
service.
® While the majority are used around homes, you'll also see the
Dusk-to-Dawners at stores, farms, motels, gas stations, restau-
rants, church and school parking areas—anywhere good night
lighting in needed.
“
