As the last note faded in the ~~ THE DALLAS POST, THURSDAY, DECEMBER, 12, 1963 ~~ In Tribute To Their Fallen Chief Marnes Stand Silent On Okinawa By a Mt. Zion Boy, E. W. LaBar, per C. H. Gilbert © “It was a cool November day and the wind blew with its fall chill from the North. The American Flag flew silently at half staff as a calm and almost complete silence fell upon the field. This is how it took place at Headquarters Battalion, 3d Marine Division (Rein), FMF Camp Hauge, Okinawa. At 11:00 A. M. on November 25, 1963 the men of our unit, five full companies with only the watch standers left behind stood at at- tention as the alert was sounded. The command, “ at ease’, was giv- en and one at a time the Division, Catholic and Protestant Chaplains offered a prayer for our fallen Com- mander in Chief, John F. Kennedy. As the prayers were offered, all to be heard were a few muffled coughs. the solemn and mournful funeral march began to play, men who had seen combat and geen comrade’s fall dead at their cides, began to cry unashamed. This was a time hearts of all men from the youngest to the oldest man on the field. We came here to pay tribute and re- spect to our leader and dedicate a new pledge ‘to defend with our very lives the freedom he so gal- lanly fought for.. Our leader is gone, challenge and we stand ready at his command. “At 11:20 A. M,, as if a sign of finality, the sad but beautiful notes of taps sounded and echoed in the wind, the glorious strains of “Am- erica the Beautiful” broke the still- ness of the air. At a funeral cadence, the men of the Battalion marched in silence and grief from the field at seventy steps per minute, ‘that of the funeral march. For the first time we knew what we could not believe was true, a man for whom we held an undying respect and deep love was gone, John F. Ken- nedy was dead.” : In our Gene's letter he said, “The | folks back home can better under- stand how we felt by this.” Mrs. Clara Higgins Funeral Saturday Word was received at press-time that Mrs. Clara Higgins, 90, had died early Wednesday morning in General = Hospital where she had been admitted two days earlier.
