\ THE DALLAS POST — THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1963 A New Craftsman In The Area A new craftsman in the area is Janet Crosson of 142 No. Lehigh Street in Shavertown. She has dem- onstrated handweaving and wood block printing at the Library Auc- tion and Rotary Fair; her textiles, drawings and graphics were ex- hibited at both events. Since moving to Shavertown in July, Mrs. Crosson has completed more than eighty woven articles, including a baby blanket for daughter Ketra, born on Novem- ber 7th. Holiday time in previous years has found her busily producing work on commission for others. However, this year Janet completed her last commission in August and selected to concentrate for the first time on woven articles for personal Christmas giving. Fortunately, a small selection of individual mats and pillows are available for sale and may be seen at the Crosson home. Since 1958, Janet has designed several series of notepaper which are unique and colorful. One pop- ular series features unusual spice and herb containers, another antique kitchen woodenware. A package of ten notes and envelopes makes an ideal inexpensive gift. It is not surprising that the most re- cent series produced features the equipment of spinners and weavers. Creative projects were begun in pre-school days and Janet’s interest in all kinds of handwork steadily developed. She finds it difficult to pin point when she first began, as she was introduced to printing pres- ses at her father’s place of business before she was six, and bead and pot holder ‘looms’ have always seemed familiar. INDIA (Continued from page 1) economic activity. Giantdams, new steel plants, fertilizer- factories, machine-making industries, atom- ic power stations, refineries- these are all linked to the National Plans. The best traditions of classical art are, to some extent still pre served in the temples. Among the most famous Indian art treasures are the murals in the cave temples of Ajanta. Modern Indian art is known for its virilty and multitude of styles. Vharat-Natyam, Kathakali, and Manipuri are some of the classical Indian dances. They are evocative and highly stylized expressions of faity in which gestures and foot- work play their allotted roles. Festivals are dear to the Indians. That is why so many Indians cele- brate so many of them. Many are linked with the year’s harvests. But there are a great many festivals woven around the tales of India’s two great Epics, while others are religious in their inspiration. India is a paradise for the sou- venir hunter. Inexpensive objects of utility and art, produced at the simple homes of craftsmen all over the country, present a bewildering variety of skill color and expres- sion. In richer materials, the same quality of the joy of creation and a continuing tradition of finework- manship are apparent. And what a wealth of objects India has to offer in this line- Kashmiri shawls, Banarasi brocades, intricate jew- elry, ivory carvings and inlaid metalware. Much of the skill and sense of color displayed in the production of India’s myriad handicrafts stems from inherited traditions that are nearly as old as the country’s history. Roshan R. Billimoria International Rotary Exchange Student From India An active participant in exhibi- tions and competitions she hashad work accepted in over 20 juried shows in three states and received citations for textiles, prints and pen and ink drawings. In October, a woodcut print was purchased by Canton (Ohio) Art Institute for their permanent collection. Surely Janet Crosson will be busy at her loom and in other endeavors of craftmanship next spring. Be- cause of the newcomer inthe family, she requests that folks interested in visiting her studio, telephonefor an appointment first. However, formal art classes in school and college added greatly to her range of interests and tech- niques. Independent study in Swed- ish weaving was undertaken at Ohio University (Athens, Ohio) in addition to instruction in ceramics, photography and commercial arts. FRANK JACKSON SAYS: Frank Jackson, Bird-Man of Harveys Lake, who no longer spends his winters here, casts a regretful eye toward his empty bird-feeders. Frank, writing from Vestal, N. Y., alerts bird-lovers in this area to watch for some pretty unusual feathered visitors to their feeders. He says that several varieties of woodpeckers may be expect- ed, including pileated, hairy, downy and sapsuckers. Chickadees and blue-jays, tufted titmice ruby and golden- crowned kinglets, white and red breasted = nuthatches, brown creepers, shrikes, winter wrens, Carolina wrens, starkings, pur- ple and gold finches, pine grosbeaks, evening grosbeaks, cardinals, red-polls, pine sis- kins, white-winged crossbills, juncoes, song sparrows and tree sparrows, and snow bunt- ings. After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1958, Janet enrolled at Haystack Mt. School of Crafts (Liberty, Maine) where she studied textiles under weaver-de- signers Jack Lenor Larsen and Azalea Thorpe, and wood design, under William Brown, later work- ing in New York City for Miss Thorpe. Janet instructed weaving at Grailville School for Wonfen (Cincinnati) and various craft media for the Richland County School for retarded Children, Mansfield Fine Arts Guild Center and Conrad House Senior Citizen's Center all of Mansfield, Ohio. 11 AM. to 7 PM. With cards to send, gifts to buy, a tree to trim and many other tasks you wear yourself out but all must be ready. Yet our preparation is so brief compared to God’s planning for that first Christmas. In I Peter we read how Christ’s Incarnation was fore- ordained before the foundation of the world. Galatians 4:4 “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.” Our best laid plans often bring disappointment but God’s plan of sal- vation brings true happiness to all who receive the Gift of His Son. Rev. L. E. Peterson Monroe Baptist Chruch In the immortal words of Scrooge’s nephew, in“*A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. “There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say, Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round — apart from the veneration due to its sacred origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that—as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-travellers to the grave, and not an- other race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, thought it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I be- lieve that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God 2 Just for Looking po FR a8 o and Listening SET OF 4 risus Place Mats Come in and get a set of four gaily colored Walt Disney place mats just for looking and listens ing to RCA Victor TV and Stereo.
