Bill To Exempt Amish
From Social Security
Nov. 6 — Rep. Richard iS. Sch-
weiker recently introduced Ilegisla-
tion exempting persons such as the
Old Order Amish from participa-
tion in the federal Social Security
program.
~The Schweiker bill would permit
members of churches whose estah-
lished doctrines forbid participation
in such programs on religious
grounds to waive their benefit
rights and be exemvted irora social
security taxes.
Applicants for exemption would
be asked to show that members of
their faith make adequate provi-
sion for elderly members to pre=
vent their needing any public aid in
their later years.
In 1961 the federal government
seized three horses belonging to an
Amish farmer in Penhnsylvania and
sold them at public auction to ob-
tain money for Social Security pay-
ments which the man refused to
make because of his religious be-
liefs.
