Haycox Dies In Florida Six weeks after her husband Harris Haycox died, Irene Mathewson Hay- cox passed away Saturday morning at her home in Boca Raton Beach, Florida. She had been ill for some time before her husband died of a heart attack August 25. Burial was at Delray Beach, Flor- ida. 3 Mrs. Haycox was active in civic affairs while a resident of Dallas, and later avhile living in Center Moreland, to which the couple mov- ed after Mr. Haycox retired from management of the Lazarus Depart- ment Store. Mrs. Haycox was a former presi- dent of Dallas Woman's Club, and held important posts in the Luzerne County Federation. She served on Girl Scout Council and was a mem- ber of Back Mountain Memorial Li- brary Board. She belonged to Dallas Methodist Church, and later to Center Moreland Methodist. During Red Cross campaigns she ‘held key positions on the West Side and in the Back Mountain. Two daughters survive: Mrs. Don- ald Besecker, Boynton Beach, Flor- ida; and Mrs. William Rattenbury, Towson, Md. There are two grand- children. Ralph Smith, pastor of Dallas Free Methodist Church, preached his last sermon September 29, an- nouncing to his congregation that he was resigning to accept the pulpit of the Free Methodist Church in Sayre. The family moved from Dallas to Sayre on Friday. Daughter Ruth, 15, is already enrolled in the Sayre high school, transferring from Dallas schools. Rev. Srhith, now a member of the Susquehanna Conference, finds bet- ter opportunities to supplement his income in Sayre than he found in Dallas. Was Active Worker In Jackson Church Mrs. Julia Youlls, 75, suffered a | cerebral hemorrhage Thursday night at her home in Meadow Lake, col- lapsing after visiting her sister, Mrs. Dorinda Jones in Wilkes-Barre. A native of Luzerne, daughter of the late Samuel C. and Julia Haw- ley Updyke, Mrs. Youlls took an active part in the Jackson Metho- dist Church affairs, teaching the Loyalty Sunday School Class and serving on the official board. She was secretary of the WSCS. Moving to Lehman Township from Courtdale twenty years ago, she had been secretary for the late Dr. William Roth of Wilkes- Barre for many years. LONG oil, from GR 7-221 1 Death Releases Madge Swepston Long awaited release came to Mrs. Madge Elma Swepston very early Tuesday morning at Nesbitt Hos- pital, where she had been admitted two months earlier. She had been | ill for nine years at her home in Elmcrest. Before onset of illness, she had been active in both the Dallas and the Wyoming Valley Woman's Club, in Women of Rotary, Irem Temple Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Library Auction. She was a member of Dallas Methodist Church | and its WSCS. Mrs. Swepston, 62, was a native of Ashley, Ohio, daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Melching Bar- ton. She moved from Kingston to the Back Mountain in 1949, immediately throwing her energies into her new community. She is survived by her husband Harry Swepston Sr., member of Dal- las School Authority Board; a son Harry Jr., Demunds Road; a sister, Mrs. Newell Minard, of Marion, Ohio, a brother Walter C. Barton, of Cardington, Ohio, Mrs. Swepston’s girlhood home; Charles, Marion, Ohio; five grandchildren. Services are scheduled for this afternoon at 2 from the Disque Fu- neral Home, Rev. Russell Lawry of- ficiating. Burial will be at Fern Knoll. Mrs. Edith Gay Dies After Long Illness Mrs. Edith Gay, 82, died Wednes- day morning at her home in Trucks- ville after a long illness. She was buried Saturday in Carverton Ceme- tery, Rev. William Reid and Rev. Charles Gilbert officiating. A native of Carverton, the former Edith Hefft was daughter of the late Daniel and Mary Reeve Hefft. Until fifteen years ago, she spent her life in Carverton, moving to Trucksville in 1948. | She was a member of Carverton Methodist Church and its WSCS, and belonged also to Mountain Grange 567. She is survived by her husband Abram; two sons: Sheldon, Lime Ridge, and Ellison, Hyattsville, Md.; two daughters: Mrs. Margaret Piatt, Hyattsville; and Kathryn, at home; six grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.
