Several scholarships are granted to graduates of secondary schools who fulfill the entrance require- ments of the college. In making scholarship awards, the Scholarship Committee con- siders the high school record and class rank of the candidate, the results of her performance on the Scholastic Aptitude test of the Col- lege Entrance Examination Board, and the recommendations madeby her high school principal, teach- ers, or guidance counselor. Scholarship awards are granted according to the ability and the financial need of students. Also available for students of the Back Mountain area is the annual tuition scholarship program set up by the late Senator Andrew Sordoni. Reymont Club, a local organiza- tion of business and professional women, offers a partial scholar- ship each year to assist a deserv- ing but needy student recommended by the college. Assistantships in the various col- lege departments are offered to a limited number of qualified students who expect to complete four years. By their service in the offices, library, laboratories, dining room, book store, assistants earn part of their yearly tuition. Many students also have received loans under the National Defense Student Loan Fund. Under this plan, repayment begins one year after the borrower has graduated, with payment period extending up to 11 years. Up to one-half of any loan (plus interest) is cancelled for service as a full-time teacher in a public elementary or secondary school. Bank loans at a low interest rate may be obtained from the Miners National Bank of Dallas and Wilkes-Barre or from the First Na- tional Bank of Wilkes-Barre. These loan agreements also contain an insurance clause providing for the education of the student in caseofa parent’s death.
