THE &iias PT THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 1963 PAGE 11-T Wilkes College Has Largest Incoming Freshman Class Wilkes College enters its seven- teenth year as an independent, co- educational, liberal arts college Monday, September 9, with the largest incoming freshman class since it was chartered in 1947. The 1967 class will number 400, ac- cording to John Whitby, registrar. One hundred seventy five of these are women; 225 are men. Wilkes faces the same problem as do other colleges and universities throughout the country — that of ac- comodating all students who re- quest admission. Quite naturally, a certain low percentage of applica- tions are refused because of inad- equate preparation for higher edu- cation. On the other hand, many who under normal conditions would be accepted, must be turned away because of lack of facilities. This, Whitby said, is true of all colleges regardless of where they are located; and with the steady in- crease each passing year of appli- cations, the problem becomes even more acute. The result, which is nation-wide is a constant raising of admission standards. A breakdown of the class of 1967 shows 150 freshmen coming from states other than Pennsylvania. LEARN TO EXERCISE Accidents happen more easily when we aren’t in good physical shape, take unnecessary chances, overdo sports on week-ends or fail to work up to heavy exercise gradually. Learn what your physical condi- tion is and exercise in amounts recognizing your age and physical condition. Watch out for getting overtired, trying to do too much strenuous exercise that strains vital organs, gives you strained, aching muscles. Walking is good exercise — golf, bowling, and the like are all good in moderation. Sports make for real fun, too. Enjoy exer- cise regularly for good health and safer living. BACK T0 These include Connecticut, Mas- sachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and Minnesota. Overseas nations represented are China, Nigeria, In- dia, Korea and Greece. Fifty stu- dents are transfers from other colleges and universities. Whitby revealed more students have applied this year then in any other previous years with applica- tions being received as early as February of the previous year. This year’s crop also shows more scholarship students than even be- fore. Actually, 30 percent of the class have been offered scholar- ships or student loans. Most scholarships are made possible by generous community who con- tribute each year to the Wilkes College Annual Appeal. Others are donated by friends of the college. In almost every case, the scholar- ship goes to the young man or woman who qualifies and who is a resident of Greater Wilkes-Barre. Whitby attributes the increased interest shown in the local college to the new research center which opens in the fall and to the recently- added graduate center. Monday, September 9, through Friday, September 13, will be de- voted to orientation of freshmen who will register Tuesday, Septem- ber 10. Thursday, September 12, is reserved for registration of up- perclassmen; and on Monday, Sep- tember 16, classes begin at eight A. M. Evening school begins Wednesday, September 11. Wilkes College offers the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Humani- ties, the social sciences, and the natural sciences; also the degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Physics, Medical Technology, Commerce and Finance; and in Art, Business, Music, Elementary, Secondary, and Bursing Educa- tion. Leveling a lens through a bus window or at a photoscenic stop along the route can result in pic- torial souvenirs of lasting pleas- ure. However, when filming from a moving bus, care should be taken to prevent pictures from blurring. To insure clear, steady photography, it is recommended that pictures be taken only when the bus is traveling slowly. Take a firm shooting position and avoid resting the camera against a win- dow whose vibration could make for blurred results. Subjects off at a distance are suggested for the most effective shots as those near- by move by too fast for clear pictures. Pederson At Clarkson College Larry Pederson, a senior this year at Lake-Lehman, is taking an extensive course in advanced Chemistry and Physics at Clarkson College of Technology, Pottsdam, New York. Larry, of Noxen, Pa., has’ at- tended Lake-Lehman High School except for half a year at Irvington, New Jersey. He sent in an applica- tion to the National Science Foundation for a summer course in advanced Mathematics and Chemistry. His marks were judged by Jane Olinatz excellent and his application was approved. Larry is now attending a six week course at Clarkson College and will complete it by August 17. The National Science Foundation pro- vides tuition for summer courses for deserving students. Each year almost 30,000 people die in rural traffic accidents, nearly three times the number of fatalities on urban streets, according to the National Safety Council.
