Our neighbors around the corner
on the other road have had a busy
week at the Farm Show in Harris-
burg. Mr. and Mrs. William Alling
‘have two daughters, Nancy and
Betsey, both enthusiastic 4-H club
members. Nancy is a freshman in
West Pittston high school. Her 4-
H Holstein heifer placed second in
open competition against 23 others.
She placed first in 4-H and won the
title of “Reserve Junior Champion”
composed of all Holstein Blue Rib-
bon winners under 2 years.
Sister Betsey’s heifer took 5th
place in 4-H competition.
It was a strenuous time for all
competitors. The four of them spent
# | Monday night at Palmyra with Mrs.
{8 | Alling’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rein-
| hart, a few miles from Harrisburg.
It meant going to bed late and get-
; ting up early but it was better than
i® | driving clear home. They all had
: a grand time, but Mrs. Alling says
she would find it hard to be a
judge of so large a number of

Twice now I have been exposed
| to chess! = Years ago I played a
little, forgot all I knew. But de-
cided it would be a good thing for
a retired man to learn to play again.
My friend Ralph Weatherly had
loaned me a'book on the game but
I hadn't dared try to play. But
Tommy Marcy whose parents and
grandparents I used to know when
I was pastor here, has taken up
the game and’ wanted someone easy
to beat to play with. So I said,
“You come and teach me while you
are beating me.” Which he did. 9
But I got him interested in a piece |
of my woodcarving and while he
was studying on that I beat him
at one game! If his mind had been
on the game I couldn't have done
it. When I get around to playing
Mr. Weatherly I'll get him into a
theological discussion and maybe
Ill not get checkmated quite so
quickly!
