SY TERESA RR RE TR TTR HE EGRET * x THE DALLAS POST — THURSDAY, S AUGUST 23, 1962 GATE OF HEAVEN SCHOOL OPENS SEPT. 4, ENROLLMENT OF APPROXIMATELY 800 Gate of Heaven School will reopen on Tuesday, September 4 with approximately 800 children enrolled. Children are drawn from the various sections of the Back Mountain area covering ten townships and Dallas Borough. According to the directives, as published by the Diocese of Scranton for the parish schools, Gate of Heaven follows the curriculum set up by the Diocesan Superintendent, Rt. Rev. Msgr. John J. Maher. The new series in arithmetic, begun last year in the Diocese, will be ex- tended this year to the fourth grade. The system eventually will make the task of transition into algebra an easy one since many of the algebraic symbols are used inthis present system of arithmetic. There will be a full faculty of thirteen Sisters with Sister M. Se- bastian, R. S. M. as Principal. This faculty will be augmented by four lay teachers, three teachers of music and a speech correctionist. In music children are trained to use the var- ious musical instruments - piano, wind, string and percussion - and under the direction of Jack Melton, a well known orchestra leader, the school boasts a very superior or- chestra. Speech correction is under direction of John Seman. Since the building is relatively new, only those class rooms have been repainted or retouched, ac- cording to need, and the library, through a donation from lastyear’s graduation class, will have new library tables to better serve the children in their use of the library. The school year will begin with full use of all facilities, nine buses being available to transport the children and a cafeteria where daily Parents: YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF TO COMPARE THE COST OF EDUCATION LOANS. Larger Enrollment For Senior High There is a decided increase in Dallas Senior High School enroll- ment from 383 in 1960-61 to 460 in 1961-62 and 577 for 1962-63. This increase has necessitated an increase in the faculty of six teach- ers; three for the 1961-62 term and three additional for the 1962-63 term. : The faculty increase in 1961-62 handled English, biology and soc- ial studies. : The additions this year are inthe fields of English, science and mathe- matics. ; It had been hoped that the size of classes in English Composition could be lowered to 20 or 22 but the increase in enrollment and the physical features of the school make that move impossible. This year classes will be held in the music room and the mechanical drawing room while the cafeteria and the auditorium will be utilized for study groups. Economics, which was offered to all senior commercial students, is now compulsory for all seniors. The State requires that each senior must now have a minimum of thirty-six hours of economics. A third year of French and Latin will be offered. : Two of our teachers spent the summer studying under grants awarded for foreign language and science. Helen Sliker attended the French seminar at the University of Connecticut while Thomas Carr participated in the Penn State sem- inar on physics. The high school will continue the teaching of new concepts of mathe- matics and science that the junior high school has been stressing. Three twenty-five minute lunch periods make it possible for all stu- dents to participate in the hotlunch program. The cost of the student lunch is .35 a day which is collect- ed by the cashier when the student is served. Milk may be purchased for .05 a bottle by students who carry their lunches. The school day begins at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 2:55 p.m. Teach- ers are available for consultation from 8:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Dallas Adopts New Record System Dallas Schools are instituting a cumulative record system, accord- ing to George McCutcheon, Guid- ance Counselor, to analyzethepro- gress of a student over the years. If the record shows no progress or loss in ability, steps can betaken to discover the reasons. Loss may be due to some fault that is undermin- ing the basic skills; to indifference; or to lack of effort. Records are systematically filed and contain up-to-date information about each student. Valuable data concerning family history, person- ality rating, activities, athletic achievement, honors and awards, hobbies, physical disability, grades to date, rank in class, rank in own group, college recommendation, test results, special training and follow-up information are record- ed. The fact that Dallas Schools are accredited by the Middle Atlantic Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges is also a part of this permanent record. This year the Dallas School Dis- trict hasjadopted a new record card, —a complete picture of the student through junior and senior high school. It is the result of two years of work by administration and guidance department, complete in every guidance aspect. In the past, transcripts were typed for use by schools and employers. This new card can be photograph- en and sent to schools, colleges, or employers requesting information. In addition to the new card sys- tem, a folder is maintained on each ' student. This folder contains per- sonal data not listed on she perma- nent record card. Disciplinary reports, notices to parents, inform- ation from previous schools, are retained in this folder for reference. A complete medical and clinical record is maintained by the school nurse. r PAGE 7—T WYOMING SEMINARY OPENING OF ITS FALL SEMESTER September 11, 1962 Registration Now Being Accepted For Beginners And Advanced Courses in SECRETARIAL PRACTICE, SHORTHAND, TYPEWRITING, BUSINESS ENGLISH CLASSES MAY BE SCHEDULED BETWEEN 8:00 A.M: AND NOON For Students Having Afternoon Employment Moderate Rates — Job Placement Service Catalogue and Further Information on Request Telephone BUtler 7-1126 lin SABA Arun You Can Count on Us...
