| annual Chicken Bar-B-Que at the
| Rod and Gun Club grounds Sunday,
honoring their Little League Base-
ball team.
Joseph Schappert was chairman
land head chef. assisted ‘by Leonard
| Bruce, Mal Nelson, Lee Bicking and
Dick Williams.
The affair ‘started at noon with
hot dogs, hamburgs, soda and cof-
fee. At 3 p.m. the main meal con-
sisting of Bar“B-Qued Chicken, Baked
Potato, and corn on ‘he cob was
served to 133.
Immediately “following the main
meal, Dick - Williams, ¢hairman of
the Lions Boys and Girls :Committee,
presented each playing member. i)

Wilkes-Barre Community Concert
series will open Tuesday night, Oct-
ober 17, when Miss Regina Sarfaty,
rising young Mezzo-soprano, appears
at ‘Irem Temple.
Mrs. Ray ‘W. Turner, Sutton Road,
President, déseribes Miss Sarfaty as |
slender singer with a |
dynamic stage presence who acts |
with intensity and eredibility. She |
“a | petite,
is~not only an ideal recitalist, but |
also a focal point on the operatic |
| stage.”
Miss Sarfaty appeared with Maria |
Callas in a performance of “Il Pir-
ata” with the American, Opera Soc- |
iety in 1959. Last season, she was
with Callas in “Madame Butterfly” |
at. the Dallas Opera, and this year
she sings again in Dallas with an-
other great soprano, Joan. Suther- |
land, “Lucia Di Lammermoor”. Also
in Dallas this season, Miss Sarfaty |
sings in the rarely heard but beauti-
ful “Thais”. She has ‘appeared with |
Renata Tebaldi in Miami in ‘“An- |
drea Chenier” and in “Butterfly” |
in Philadelphia.
Now in her early twenties, Miss
Sarfaty was born in Rochester, and
grew up in ‘Brooklyn. In 1952 she

She has toured with. the NBC
Opera ‘Company and appeared ‘in

| Leonard Bernstein on “Omnibus”. |
One of her early television appear- |
ances was. with the Ed Sullivan
Show.
Three other community concerts
| this current season will include per-
| formances by Rudolf Serkin, inter-
nationally famous concert pianist; |
{ Detroit Symphony Orchestra with |
| Paul Paray conducting and the Fest- |
| ival Quartet, which lists as its mem- |
bers Vietor Babin, pianist; William |
Primrose, violist; Nikoali Grauden, |
| "cellist; and Szymon Goldberg, vio- |
| | linist. !
Miss Edna Cotton, Secretary of |
| the Association, reports that there |
are still approximately twenty sub- |
| scriptions available before the |
S.R.O. sign will have to be posted. |
