Killed In Crash
ALVA B. IDE
Alva B. Ide, native of Idetown and
long-time resident of Reading, died
in a highway accident in Iowa May
19. His body was returned to
Reading for burial.
Mr. Ide, 51, owner of the Ide Rest
Home near Birdsboro, had been on
vacation in Hawaii. He and his wife,
returning from the Islands, were
crossing the country from (California,
when a six-car crash near Mount
Pleasant, Towa, enlisted his atten-
tion. While flagging down traffic,
he was run down and killed when
a rear-end collision thrust another
car at him. Mrs. Ide, still in the
family car, was not injured.
Two minutes before the crash, a
chain reaction caused by a State
Policeman stopping a drunken
driver on the highway, Mr. Ide had
turned to his wife and said, “Well
Mother, we've come all this way
and we haven't seen an accident.”
In the picture, Mr. Ide wears the
uniform of the Coast Guard Auxili-
ary.
He was born in Idetown, son of
the late Harry and Lulu Baird Ide.
Thirty-five years ago he moved to
the Reading area. A brother, Lyn-
ford, died at 13.
His wife is the former Dorothy
Edinger. He leaves also a daugh-
Mrs. Alva Lucy Hinkley, of
Indiana; two sisters, Mrs. Elmer
Hoover of Idetown and Mrs. Roxie
Hessler, Kingston. A stepmother,
Mrs. Ruth Ide of Idetown, survives,
and two half sisters: Mrs. Doris
Schallenberger, New Jersey, and
Mrs. Elsie Jean Wagner, Lancaster:
a niece and two nephews.
