TEACHING DOGS TRICKS By Bob Bartes Prominent Dog Authority A dog that can sit up, roll over, or play dead on command may amuse onlookers, arouse a sense of pride in the owner and provide some fun for the dog, but the real benefits are reaped at the time of ‘trick-teaching. While trying hard to understand what his master wants, Fido not only develops respect and devos tion for him, but .adds to his fund of knowledge as well. The teacher learns to better under- stand his pet, improves his own training .technique and builds up a warm feeling of compan: ionship. And it's easy enough to teach your dog tricks, particularly if he’s been previously trained in # obedience, The secret is to get, your dog to associate the com- mand with the action, and want to perform for you. As a friend of mine once said, “A hungry dog is a smarter dog.” Teach your dog just before meal time and reward him with a dog bis- cuit or cube. If you want him to play dead, roll him over on his side while you give the com- mand. Keep doing this until he finally catches on and performs all by himself at command. At this time reward him with much petting, praise and a snack. Another trick that’s practical as well as impressive is teach- ing him to bring you your slip- pers, pipe or papers. Since most dogs readily learn to retrieve a ball or toy, this is an easy one. A word of warning. Keep les. sons short. About ten minutes at a time is enough, for a dog's powers of concentration are lim- ited.
