We think you have a right to leave them there if you want to. We also think it is a rather careless thing to do. Many women will pay one, two, three thousand dollars for a mink coat. It was some. thing she wanted ‘all her life. She cherishes it. Wouldn't think for a moment to leave it where a thief could lay his hands on ‘it. But she will take the eoat and leave a three thousand dollar car sitting on a street with the keys init. We had no intention in‘ singling out any woman, Men are more apt to do such a trick. It was intended as an example of what people will do. It is a foolish ‘and careless thing to do. Why don't we stop? It’s habit. Well it's time we broke the habit. We encourage car thieves. In the United States in 1958, 270,965 cars were stolen. A total property loss of $226,225,775.00. True the police re- covered 250,643 or 92% of them. But the police could apply their time to many other things. Cars are stolen principaly for three | reasons: joy riding: by juveniles; for use in other crimes and plunder and profit. You can. help the police if you take your keys out of your car. And remember, you who own Buicks and Chevrolets, put your ignition on “lock” when you ‘take the keys out or you may as well:leave them. You don’t need a key for these cars. _ Many outside organizations are cooperating in this matter. The American ‘Legion throuch the Wy= oming Valley Automobile Associa- tion is mailing brochures; entitled, “Remove your car keys.” In. some cities a sticker is placed on the wind- shield if the police see keys in your car. In other cities, a sticker is placed in or on the car and you get your keys back by taking the sticker to the police station. Help your police. Remove your car keys.
