Re- hearsals are tightening up all along the line, with Barbara Weisberger drilling the chorus, assisted by Bob- by Rodham, JOHN DETRO As Babe Williams, the stunning blonde of the original play, Mrs. Detroy plays opposite William Bris- lin. Mrs. Detroy’s hair, which she had to cut as short as possible for the South Pacific scene where she washed her hair nightly on stage, is exactly right for Babe Williams, its springing curls forming a blonde halo for her vital little face with its fleeting dimples. Mrs. Detroy and her husband John were both music majors at Eastman School of Music in Rochester. John heads the music department at Wilkes, and is organ- ist at First Methodist Church in Wilkes-Barre. Mrs. Detroy is so- prano ‘soloist at First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Detroy and Mrs. Eugene Farley collaborated on a two-piano program last winter in the Town and Gown series of Sunday after- noon concerts at Wilkes, Some years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Detroy played summer stock in Evansville, Indiana, John as chorus- master, Eleanor as soprano. It was a nice arrangement, as John’s par- ents live in Evansville and con- stituted a pair of built-in baby- sitters for young Douglas, who had been born in Mississippi, where Mr. Detroy held his first teaching post in a girls’ school. Douglas is nine years old at present. Mr. Detroy will conduct the orchestra for The Pajama Game. In the presentation of the North- east Regional Ballet Festival May 22, he will handle timpani under conductor Ferdinand Liva, who will direct the Symphony Orchestra. Timpani was Mr. Detroy’s minor subject while in Rochester, piano his major. J Both Mr. and Mrs. Detroy are do- it-yourself fans, painting the house on Carverton Road inside and out, and laying floor tiles. Neither one goes in extensively for gardening, as they are both too busy with other pursuits. Mrs. Detroy’s idea of a good time is to cook for four- teen people, so she is always ready for the word, ‘Let’s entertain next week.” Her favorite sports are tennis and swimming. She'd like to get back to playing golf. ‘ It is an artistic family through and through. Mrs. Detroy’s brother, Harold Schwarm, teaches art at Southern Illinois University. Mr. Schwarm’s wife is also an artist. The family, with its six children, is on the verge of leaving for California as soon as school is over for the year. The Little Theatre production of The Pajama Game says Mrs. Ralph Smith, wife of the treasurer of the organization, promises to be one of the best of the recent musicales, with a marvelous cast. Productions have a large follow- ing in the Back Mountain, where many residents are closely con- nected with the Little Theatre, as board members, actors, and produc- tion personnel. |.
