KROPP PAUL SNYDER CARL ASTON Auditors - _(17-Year Locusts tect young trees from locust dam- ter, and invocation given by William | assistant professor of. Due This Year An invasion of 17-year locusts is | due in varying degree in at least | 18 Pennsylvania counties the latter part of next May, according to L. H. Bull, State Deputy Secretary of Agriculture. He cautioned fruit growers to pro- age. The locusts are not harmful to humans but can do extensive damage to trees when they appear in large numbers, Bull explained. Known to scientists as the “per- iodic cicada,” there are eight differ- ent “broods” that emerge from the ground in Pennsylvania every 17 years, each in a different year. The éoming of “Brood XIV” is the first appearance of any brood in Pennsylvania since the so-called big locust year in 1953 when records show emergence in 35 counties in the eastern half of the State. The next will be in 1961. Counties where brood XIV last appeared in 1940 and in which they may be expected the last week in May, to disappear by early July, in- clude: Clearfield, Clinton, Adams, Bedford, Berks, Blair, PAGE ELEVEN Cumberland, Franklin, Lehigh, Luzerne, Montour, Northumberland, Potter, Snyder, Schuylkill, Tioga, Union and York. Appearance of locusts may be heavy in some of the counties, very light or not at all in others. They may even crop up in new areas depending on depletion or increase of broods during the 17-year hiber- nation period. Bull called upon farm- ers and others to report appearances to the Department. According to records maintained by Dr. Thomas L. Guyton, director, Bureau of Plant Industry, Bull said the periodical cicada due this year will appear also from Massachusetts to Illinois and south to Northern Georgia. While the pest may not be especially heavy in Pennsylvania there will be damage to small twigs of trees where female locusts slit the bark to deposit eggs, thereby weakening the twig to the breaking point. Leaves die on the broken tip’ and may give a “dead” appearance to many trees in a highly infested area. : When two newlyweds feather their nest, it's usually not hard to find four well plucked parents near by.
