An art workshop for elementary teachers was proposed for October 2, 3 and 4, after school hours and during the early evening. Mrs. Fern Whitby, appointed hostess for the group, was authorized to visit a similar workshop now in operation in Tunkhannock. Anthracite Institute for Develop- ment of Schools, operating in Wilkes-Barre, and the Penn State study group, will continue to be used, AIDS by Westmoreland, Penn State by Township schoolmen, with pooling of information. The AIDS program deals with elementary level reading, the Penn State group with administrative problems. Three, and possibly five, elementary teach- ers will attend the AIDS. Mr. Kuhnert will again attend Penn State. Mr. Martin, Charles James, Mr. Kuhnert and Mr. Austin were auth- orized to attend the Educational Congress in Harrisburg September 26 and 27. Mr. Martin stressed the import- ance of the demonstration teaching session at Bloomsburg November 3, saying that teachers who attend this annual meeting derive great. benefit from it. An evaluation program, including 1.Q. and achievement tests, was recommended for the entire system, with grades 4, 6, 9 and 11 possible selections for spot testing. Teachers meetings were set for every other Friday afternoon, school to be dismissed half an hour early, and teachers to remain for another half hour. : New contracts for all professional employees were authorized. A change in report cards to bring about uniformity was tabled until next year, as each system has a stock of cards on hand. Cafeteria Centralization of cafeteria control seemed to board members to prom- ise economy, an opinion voiced by Dr. Robert Bodycomb. Mr. Kuhnert, whose school oper- ates the largest cafeteria in the sys- tem, was asked to exercise juris- diction. No merging of expenses is contemplated this year. Monroe Township has the longest establish- ed school cafeteria in the area, orig- inally manned by volunteer help. At Dallas Township, practically all students patronize the cafeteria as very few are within walking dis- tance of the school. e Financing Frank Townend, chairman of the Finance Committee, recommended appointment of Butcher and Sher- rard as financial advisor. A vote sustaining his recommendation was lost. Board members felt. that with actual construction so far in the future, further consideration might well be given. Kidder, Peabody, Inc. and Ira Haupt, were among the companies offering their services. Miscellaneous A school calendar was adopted, and bills ordered paid. Nation-Wide pupil insurance at a cost of $1.25 per pupil was adopted. Mr. Kuhnert, recovering from a recent operation, was authorized to take a week's vacation. Improvement of electrical service, with heavier installation, at Beau- mont, was approved, Paul Shaver to do the work at a cost of approxi- mately $250 to $275. Mr. Kuhnert mentioned the over- crowded condition of the fourth grade at the Township school, with 45 pupils in one section, 42 in the second. t Monroe Township men left at 11:15, with adjournment following shortly thereafter. Full quotas of directors were pres- ent from Dallas Borough, Kingston Township, Dallas Township, Frank- lin Township, with Charles W. Smith absent from Monroe. Atty. Mitchell Jenkins was present. Interested visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Fred Eck, who suggested that more of the hack problems be handled by committees: George Ja- cobs, Charles Eberle, Rev. Robert D. Yost, Mts. Calvin Hall, and Henry Peterson. Harry Ohlman presided. right to reject any or all proposals. ALAN S. The mailbox at the Smith Economy Store, Huntsville Road, yielded a dead snake last week. The box at the corner of Spring Street and Lehman Avenue had paper and leaves in it. Last winter kids stuffed both these boxes with snow, which melted on the letters. Kids are missing a bet on the big collection box at the en- trance of Old Goss Manor. So far, nothing. Watch it, Mom.
